Schwilly, the mp2's just a straight pre + phantom, right?  I like the sound of the mp2, but think he might be better off with an external A/D like the AD-20 or sbm1.

I know that the A/D in the JB3 isn't the greatest, but I still think the MP2 analog into the JB3 will sound better than the AD20.   I haven't ran an AD20, but have ran the MP2>JB3 setup a few times and have been happy with the results.  I've never been very impressed with the AD20.

I have all the stuff to do that ad-20 mod, but I was going to run the power from the main power and use my Makita battery to power it. But then I changed my mind and decided to pick up a ps-2, samson adaptors and those mini xlr connectors to do my own phantom mod. I haven't jumped in yet because I'm still waiting on the adaptors. I'm also going to build a mini xlr to mini for using the BB when I want to have as little stuff as possible.

Agreed.  The mp2 has a much better sound as a preamp than the AD-20.  I think the solution is mp2->mod SBM1->JB3.  Problem solved :)

I'm wondering what would be a good, small, fairly inexpensive power/A/D module.  Price is probably the most important factor

Not sure if ye olde MP-2 > modSBM-1 > whatever-the-hell 7pin/optical cable is the cheapest option...

Except you'd have to go mp2 > modSBM-1 > optical converter > JB3.  That's quite a bit of gear, especially since a modSBM-1 goes for over $500 (way too much for what it is, IMNSHO).  You'd have to spend over a grand to get all that gear.  Whereas a modAD-20 is about $300 used ($400 new).

I think the AD-20 is a great all-in-one box, especially if it's modded to power the mics...

No, the A/D is pretty clean.  It's the preamp stages that pickup the HD noise.  If you feed the A/D a line-level signal, you won't notice anything.  At least I never had a problem all the times I used it.  Skalinder did a test of the JB3 A/D vs that of a D7 or D8, didn't he?  And they were pretty comparable?

NJB3 v. D100.  I can re-post the BT if there's interest (assuming I still have it lying around somewhere).
