As with recording gear, people will need to know:

[1] budget
[2] what other gear you use or plan to use

Hey sorry about the wrong forum, I forget there's so many of them!

Budget would be around $300, but I'd be willing to go higher if it was a really good deal or something.
And I need pretty much everything.  I should have probably specified speaker system.  Is $300 reasonable for a good system?  Or is that way out of the league?

Do a search, there is lots on this.

Some decent ones in your price range are Paradigm and PSB. The new PSB image 2 way speaker got a great review in a recent stereophile, very nice measurements for an inexpensive speaker.

Happy listening,
Ben

The Canadian speakers are not bad, (PSB, etc.)
But I prefer the british offerings. Look around Audiogon. the Neat's I posted above are a great speaker you will not be quick to replace.

Thom offered to sell these to me a few months ago, I almost took him up on it.  I'm looking at a pair of new M22ti from Axiom paired with a HSU Sub...

Everything I have read about the Axioms has given them rave reivews.

I have a very strong opinion and this issue...and I've felt the same way since I was 15 years old. To me, the best setup to have is a combination of Carver components and Klipsch speakers. These together create an incredible sound. New, any combination here would be a bit pricey. However, I looked on ebay and both Carver components and Klipsch speakers can be had used for fairly cheap. You couold definitely do something about the speakers in your pirce range. I would recomend the kg3's. But there are of course other variables here like size of room etc. If you need any help looking in to this let me know. I'd be more than happy to do what I can.

I'll fluff Klipsch a little bit... I like the Klipsch Heresy II's that I am borrowing from a friend right now.  A bit awkward shaped and sized, but sound pretty good to my ears.
Tickets are dead to me.  Except the ones I have, don't have, and lost.  Not to mention the ones you have, don't have, and lost.   And the ones that other dude has, doesn't have, and lost.  Let me know if you need some tickets, I'm happy to oblige.

PSB speakers can be found over at upscaleaudio.com.  They have a bunch of b-stock pairs that they sell for just about 30% off retail.  I bought a pair of the Image 5t's and the blem wasn't noticeable, esp on an black ash finish.

you can get A stock psb's cheaper at both saturdayaudio.com or soundcity.com  If you are looking for bookshelves, you can get the 1Bs for $199 and 2B's for $249.  The price isn't always advertised on the web, so make sure to call to get the best price.

Paradigm needs to be fluffed in this thread, and I think I'm just the guy to do it.  I'd definately check them out, they seem to hold value pretty well.

i'll also recommend Klipsch.  sounds like a set of bookshelfs might do you good at the $300 price point.  if you have any specific questions on any models let me know.  my desk sits in engineering so i have easy access.  ;D

I'm running Magnepan MMGs and highly reccomend them.  They are big and take a lot of juice to push them, but the sound stage is great and they sound great for playback of live shows......

Elwood: What?
Jake: This car. This stupid car. Where's the Cadillac? The Caddy? Where's the Caddy?
Elwood: The what?
Jake: The Cadillac we used to have. The Blues Mobile!
Elwood: I traded it.
Jake: You traded the Blues Mobile for this?
Elwood: No. For a microphone.
Jake: A microphone? Okay I can see that.
