Title: Pre Out - S/PDIF in ?????
Post by: cavernut on December 25, 2008, 07:10:55 PM
This is probably a really dumb question, but i cant answer it myself. If i use a pre like the V3 that can output a digital signal from 24/32khz to 24/192khz and run it into the S/PDIF input on my microtrak II who has a built in D/A that can convert signals up to 24/96khz. Can the Microtrak II record the signal at 24/192khz? So the real question is by using the MTII as a bit bucket does its D/A limitations have anything to do with the S/PDIF recording performance???

BTW, Merry Christmas...............

I think if your using a V3 - your going to want to use the A/D on the V3 rather than the MT...

OK Maybe i didn't explain this right. If I'm using the V3 at 24/192 and i run that S/pdif into the MTII, is the MTII capable of recording at the 24/192 rate or will it have a little MTII heart attack. I know that the mtII is only capable of 24/96 from its own D/A. but if I'm not using it's own d/a can it record higher rate by merely using just using it as a bit bucket?

It cannot record at 192... not to mention your file size would be enormous, greatly reducing your record time.

imho, anything more than 48khz is a waste of space unless you have a golden year (or are doing something serious in the studio).

i have the ability to record up to 96 and pretty much stay at 44.1 since most of the time i am going to just burn to cd... i might go to 48 at some point, but not in a hurry.

You're confusing D/A with A/D, that's what's messing folks up.

You do not need to record at 192kHz, period.

cavernut, the MicroTrack doesn't have the ability to take an incoming digital signal and resample it to a higher rate, if that's what you mean.

This is completely aside from the question of why you might want to do it; there would be no improvement in specifications or performance if it were possible, since the recorder would merely be recording the identical information while consuming twice as much disk space per unit time. But anyway the recorder just doesn't have that ability.
