Title: How well do 1/8" couplers pass along power provided by a preamp?
Post by: ycoop on October 10, 2018, 01:24:23 PM
Recently acquired a CA9100, and want to be able to leave it running in my bag at the base of a 9 ft stand. The CA-14s I have are wired with only 5 feet of cable, so I'd like to extend them with coupler and additional length of cabling. Will a quality coupler be able to pass along the 9V from the CA9100? If so, what recs do you have for a brand that produces quality couplers?

Works.  A 6' to 10' Ratshack stereo-mini headphone extension cable will do the job.  I'd not extend the run any further than that.  The biggest issue is preventing intermittency or outright disconnection at the non-locking mini-jack connections.  Clean all plugs and jacks well before connecting and secure the connections well with a wrap of gaff tape.  Good to velcro-tie your cables to the stand both above and below the connection to prevent any mechanical stress on the connection.

For a better solution, reterminate to locking connectors (such as mini-XLR) or make a permanent splice within a short section of tubing well secured with glue-backed heat-shrink over the assembly extending out a couple inches to each side to boht secure the cables and serve as strain-relief.

Thanks for the thorough answer, as usual.

A few questions:

How hard of a soldering job is converting the TRS to mini-xlr?
What's the best way to clean the plugs and jacks?

90%+ alcohol, or any commercial contact cleaner like Caig, etc.

Depends on the wiring and your soldering skills.  Not difficult, but can be challenging if the wires are super tiny.  More attention to detail in getting good solder joints and securing the connector so as to be robust.
