silver solder?
« on: March 29, 2004, 04:26:36 PM »
so I had Audio Magic modify a pair of Presto II cables from XLRm->RCAm to XLRf->RCAm, and I have a pair of approximately 2 ft of cable left.  They are sending it all back to me and I am thinking of just taking the remaining cable and making myself a set of RCA interconnects with it.  What would be the impact of using a 60/40 Rosin Core Solder vs silver solder?  And if I need silver solder, where can I get some?

Appreciate all input!

Nick

You can get 4% silver solder at parts express, Homegrown audio, percy audio.

If you need just enough for 4 RCAs, I can spare that.

What about Rat Shack "Silver Bearing" solder? Is that any good? It doesn't say what percentage it is.

Any preference to using silver solder over 60/40 rosin core for making some StarQuad mic cables with Neutrik connectors?  Is one better than the other? If so, why? Please get as technical as possible. If one is better for mic cables, in what situations would the other be preferred?

in many instances audiophiles make mountains out of molehills about OFC copper, silver wires, dielectrics, etc.  as long as you make a good solder joints (no cold joints), you should be good to go.

I was going to have audio magic change the ends on my cables to right angles.  Just wonder how much it cost for you to have them switched to rca

around $40-$50 for them to do it shipped back to me...I dont remember the exact price.  Definitely reasonable.  Send Jerry an email and ask him how much it would be.
