What does the button you can slide on top of the xlr cables do?  Also, I'm running a at853rx's>ua-5>jb3.  I plugged everything up and got no recordings tonight despite trying everything.  I had my setting as follows.....UA-5, Lo-Z, analog, stereo, 44.1khz, sens buttons at 9 o'clock, coaxel, adv off.  JB3, Optical In, Wav, 0 dbs.  I got no recording levels and when I play back through headphones on the jb3 it just sounds like energy coming through the recording, absolutly NO MUSIC or SOUND!  I'm freaking out right now. Please Help. Thank You,

P.S. Is it possible I blew something up while fucking around trying to get it to work?

JB3, Optical In, Wav, 0 dbs.

Two things:

[1]  What Brad said.

[2]  If set for optical-in, the JB3 displays no dB level information...I'm assuming the that's 0dbs you mention.  Perhaps you had the JB3 set for line-in?  Try duplicating the setup at home in front of a TV or stereo...just to nail it down before you head out to your next recording session.

The Phantom power is on if the ua-5 is on, Correct?

nope, you have to turn it on.  It is the small red button that lights up beside the mic inputs.  Sounds like that is your problem.

So you've tested to confirm that solved your problem?  I'm still a little concerned about your listing "0dbs" in your JB3 settings.  Make sure you set the JB3 for optical input!

Yes, I have tried it out and it works just great.  So excited.  Does anyone know what I'm talking about with the at 853 and that button you can slide on top of the xlr cables?

Also, that makes sense about not plugging or unplugging the mics when the ua-5 is on, are there any other things I should avoid as to not blow up my equipment?

My first recording was of me playing Breathe by Pink Floyd and I got that feeling I was longing for all night, just had to go throught some major freaking out before it came.

I'm sure thats it, what does it do exactly, and when should I use it?

I am guessing the "button" you are speaking of is the roll off option on the XLR connectors for the 853rx - that switch determines if roll off (bass reduction) is engaged.  Use the straight line setting for no roll off, and the angled line when you want to reduce the amount of bass captured on the recording.  You should be able to know whether to use it, depending on the room and the band (and previous recordings).

That "button" is indeed the rolloff. Flat line is, well, flat, the one with a kink is the rolloff.
