Audio Technica mic service?
« on: November 20, 2017, 11:30:15 AM »
Dropped one of my AT4041's onto asphalt (don't ask). Screen is dented in; mic seems to work but at very low output levels. I have not reached out to AT yet. Anyone have any experience with AT service, or any suggestions on who to have look at it?

Thanks in advance

It's been more than ten years, but I sent in an A-T electret stereo microphone, not designed for phantom powering, that had been accidentally connected to 48 Volt phantom powering. They turned it around right away as I recall, and charged no more than parts and a minimum bench fee.

Thanks!! I guess it wouldn't hurt to give them a shout

I think they're a really responsible outfit all around. I think quite highly of the company, from all my dealings with them and their people.

I contacted them about shock mount elastics for the shock mount for a 4033 I bought used and they sent me one for no charge, not even postage. Good company and people who will help you out.

Where is AT USA service located?  I think AT products are fantastic, and have never had to have anything repaired, but am curious.

OK. Other than it talking a little longer than I would have liked, this was a pretty positive experience. I sent both mics in (just in case they could be "matched" or whatnot. Got a call with the findings, and repairs completed.

The damaged "element" was replaced; also, the "grip" (the actual tube or body). They also tested the non-damaged mic and detected a slight ground hum, so they replaced the grip on that too. Brandi (who did the repairs) said that the newer style grips provided better grounding due to the insides being "buffed". She also said that they couldn't provide a chart of the performance, but that when she took them into the chamber they were within tolerances and also within a half dB of each other.

Including shipping, $129.10. I'm happy

Sounds like a pretty fair price. Glad it worked out for you.

Yes, I was pleasantly surprised, both with the service and price, but mostly with the open communication with the person working on them. She's even going to scrounge around for some subcard caps for my AT853's!

It's interesting that A-T evidently has an anechoic chamber in the U.S., with a measurement setup that lets them track compliance with response specifications. They would have to do some pretty careful setup to make its results comparable with the one(s) in Japan and the other Asian countries where their manufacturing is done.

By contrast, no European manufacturer that I'm aware of has any such setup in the U.S.; that severely limits the service (other than outright replacement) that they can perform on microphone capsules.
