Problem with R-09?
« on: September 17, 2008, 04:21:05 AM »
Has anyone come across R-09 preamp being deffective causing bass distortion on recordings? I have been running DSM mics with the bbox Mic-in, plug in power OFF, level meter not going over the -20db mark even at very loud rock shows. The bass sounds distorted on most recordings I've made since summer this year. What's interesting is that the more bass roll-off frequency I set, the more distorted bass I get. Is this possible at all?

Any insight would be highly appreciated.

How's your battery life in the BB?  As the battery loses juice, you will get a bass distorted recording.
Busman Audio BSC1-K1/K2/K3/K4 > HiHo Silver XLR's > Deck TBD

CA-14 (c,o)/MM-HLSC-1 (4.7k mod)/AT853(4.7k mod)(c,o,h,sc)/CAFS (o)/CA-1 (o) > CA-9100 (V. 4.1)/CA-9200/CA-UBB > Sony PCM-D50/Sony PCM-M10

Although an alkaline battery in the bb could last up to 3000 hours, I wanted to make sure it is not an issue with the battery and replaced it with a new one before going to the last two shows. Same result, i.e. bass distortion.

Sounds like it could be a mic sensitivity issue then. Did you check with Guy Sonic? I don't think it's the R-09 unless you have tried another pair of mics with it.  I have 3 sets of stealth mics (MM's, and 2 pair of AT's) and don't have distortion issues when using either my 9100 pre or an SP (no roll off) BB into the R-09.

Yes, Guy Sonic is being of tremendous help trying to understand what the issue could be. I simply wanted to see if anyone came across a similar problem with another mics.
