Is the fan on top of the heatsink replaceable or do I I have to replace the whole heatsink?

you can replace the fan...is the fan going out?  is your cpu running hot?  If your whole comp is running warm..I would add more/better case fans (make sure one is coming in, and other going out).  The cpu fan shouldn't make that much of a difference, unless it is just extremly loud, and you are trying to eliminate that.  didnt you say you had a 1.5ghz athlon?  most of those were sold in a "retail" package, that came with a decent heatsink and fan.

if you have an athlon and the fan isn't working properly, get a new one immediately.  athlons run hotter than intel's, my fan broke, and i put a smaller fan on, not covering the whole chip and within a couple of months, i had melted my chip and my mobo.

Nothing is runnig hot...yet.  Been hearing what I thought was the harddrive crapping out....when I opened the case today, found out the sound was coming from the CPU fans...bearings going out maybe.  I'll be getting a new fan this weekend.  Thanks.

keep an eye out on the fan, due to my laziness i had to shell out for a new processor just last week.  i bought the thing in august and the fan crapped out already.

I never turn my box off...definately would be a good idea to start doing that until I get a new fan!

If you have the option to shop around a bit, ThermalTake makes some kickass heatsinks & fans.

From what I remember from building it, isn't the heatsink actually glued down to the processor?  How hard is it to replace?

They're typically held on by clips going through the heatsink & attaching onto the CPU socket.

Unless you can find an exact size replacement fan, anything you buy will come attached to a heatsink.

the heatsink isnt glued to the processor but many use a thermal goo that aids in transferring heat to the heatsink from the CPU core...this white paste(sometimes silver) is probably what you are referring to.

if you notice your cpu fan to be making excessive noise, you realy should replace the fan as soon as possible...$20-25 instead of $100 for new processor is a wise investment

I remember putting the heat compound on it.  Does that adhere the 2 together or will I be able to get them apart easily?

it doesnt adhere them together, but you might have to pull a little bit.
be carefull so you dont inadvertantly bend any of the cpu pins

yeah, over time the paste can dry up a bit & get tacky but it won't be hard like glue... more like cookie dough.

It has a full size fan on like you use for the case. You should remove any thermal paste that is on the cpu with a qtip. When you reapply the paste make sure you make a thin layer. To much paste can cause overheating. NEVER run the chip without a fan. I fried a athlon 1.33 in 10 secs becuase I didnt have the heatsink on the chip correctly

Funny enough my just shit out wed , I replaced the whole kit for about 15 bucks from  My local Pc store,

I have an AMD (800 thunderbird) in the FTP box and bought a Fan made By Microfin.

Took about 2 seconds an wammo were back in buisness.

I too run my machine nonstop as If im not pulling a torrent someone is on my ftp server , SO I only reboot about once a month.
