Title: Hosa ODY314 Fiber Optic Splitter
Post by: (((KB))) on April 16, 2006, 03:24:54 PM
Anyone used a Hosa ODY314 Fiber Optic Splitter? I assume it's solid, I was just wondering if there was any known issues with it.

not really helpful for the hosa box, but i can tell you the jb3 is really fussy about split optical signals, fwiw.

AFAIK, though, everyone who's had trouble with split optical signals has used a passive splitter.  The ODY-314 looks like an active splitter, so it theoretically shouldn't suffer from the problem others experienced.

I have tried one of those little black passive splitters... it doesn't work at all... tried it on several different recording devices. Maybe the Hosa box will do the trick.
I was hoping someone had used that Hosa box before that could confirm if it works w/ a NJB3 before I order something that doesn't work. If I end up buying it, I'll post a follow-up with my test results.

Just posting a follow-up on this. I stuck my neck out on this and bought one ($55 w/ shipping) to try it out.

Just tested it out a few min. ago and it sucessfully passed optical signals through both output transmitters. Tested on the following device combinations so far:

Sucessful Test 1:
CDRW home deck  > optical > ODY314 > optical >...
ODY314 out 1 > optical  > MD home deck
ODY314 out 2 > optical > NJB3
(Tested set up w/ both AC plug 9v 50ma and DC Batt. 9v 50ma tip positive - Rat Shack type B tip)

Sucessful Test 2:
CDRW home deck > optical > ODY314 > optical >...
ODY314 out 1 > optical  > M- Audio Transit > USB > iBook G3/600
ODY314 out 2 > optical > NJB3
(Tested set up w/ both AC plug 9v 50ma and DC Batt. 9v 50ma tip positive - Rat Shack type B tip)

Sucessful Test 3:
CDRW home deck > optical > ODY314 > optical >...
ODY314 out 1 > optical  > MD portable
ODY314 out 2 > optical > NJB3
(Tested set up w/ both AC plug 9v 50ma and DC Batt. 9v 50ma tip positive - Rat Shack type B tip)

Recording a local band tonight to further test it for field applications. Says it only draws 9v 50ma, doubtful that it will fail on-site tonight. ;D
