Title: Apogee Mini-Me: no longer available!
Post by: Brian Skalinder on August 20, 2007, 06:07:49 PM
Saw this in another thread...

Sorry but the Mini-ME was discontinued as of July 27th. I was talking about the Mini-MP.

...and didn't see it posted anywhere else at TS.  I think it deserves its own thread.  Also found this on Apogee's Mini-Me page (http://www.apogeedigital.com/products/minime.php):

Not neccesarily a shorter version needed.  They just need to put the controls on what are now the sides and all would be swell.  I'd pick up another MP if they did it.

Ok so here is the deal with the minime.  I just got off the phone with Tony at apogee.  He told me that the mininme is 6 years old and it is time for a redesign.  He reports that several of the parts used in the minime are getting hard to come by.  He states this has somewhat forced the end of the minime as we know it.  He would not commit to when a new product is coming out, but stated the 2 channel market is a huge market and apogee will certainly be in that market.  He stated that there is nothing currently in development, which kinda burst my bubble.  I asked him about dsd, and he is not impressed by it and states Apogee will likely not go in that direction.  As far as support Apogee will continue to support any repairs needed for the minime, but did not say how long(ala ad1000).  I am sure it will be for a few years yet.  I thanked him and told him I am looking forward to a new product.
He kinda chuckled and that was it.

This whole thing is just weird.

Peace OOK

while this is certainly unfortunate, maybe this will help bring the used price of these things back up... can't believe how cheap I've seen some of these for in the yard sale... There's no way I'd ever sell mine if the best I can hope for is a mod UA5 trade or ~500 bucks.

Yeah, but their Mini MP is just as good from the specs. I guess it was their replacement.

no, the MiniMP is not a replacement for the MiniMe, nor do I think it was ever intended to be.  the MiniMP is a pre-amp only, and has no A/D converter.

I guess they are looking to make more money.  :-\  b/c now you have to buy the Mini DAC to use in conjunction with the Mini MP. Maybe they are just putting better components into each of the units? who knows.

Nope, the DAC is a digital>analog converter.  The mini-me was an ADC analog>digital converter with preamps. Makes you wonder though if it will be an all in one box, or just an ADC, that they replace it with.

Now that may be worth putting some pennies aside for.

Funny in that it took them 5 years to release the Firewire option that was advertised as a future option almost immediatly after the Mini-ME was released back in 2002. And then they drop the Mini-ME altogether.

Looks like there is a replacement of sorts.  I wonder if it will work without being hooked to a computer...

It's bus powered via firewire.  Breakout cable has xlr and 1/4"ins, and I believe 1/4" out.  Not to useful for us unless folks want to go back to lugging the laptop in the field.  Uuuuuhhg, only reason I bring a laptop to gigs is to surf ts  :P

It's bus powered so doesn't look like it can run standalone...

Looks sexy except for the breakout cables. ICK. Otherwise, apple integration looks tight.
I might take a look if it sounds as good as the Ensemble (and has less issues).
I bet it will sell well.

Always considered getting a mini me but price held me back early on and later
felt it was bandwidth limited (usb 1) old tech. The firewire option and price drop came too late :(
It they had the price drop and firewire option 3 years ago, I would have been all over it.

What they need to do is to make a two channel CF recorder.
The Duet is "way cool" and may sound wonderful, but looks and feels Mac-centric.
It surely is not a durable field recording solution, with break-out cables and a "uni-knob".

Sad to see the MiniMe go.
