Cardioid Distance?
« on: August 30, 2003, 03:13:49 PM »
Newbie here with my first post. Tomorrow I'll be recording Los Lobos, outside, with a new mic stand and mic attachment piece. The mics will be mounted on a horizontal 2 foot flexible rode that I can bend to put the mics right next to each other or 2 feet apart. I purchased the set up through Sound Professionals. So, what is the best positioning to get a full sounding stereo recording?

My mics are Sound Professionals Premium Shure Super Cardioid  (SP-CMC-18).

Also, a total rookie question, What sample frequency should I set my D8 at? 48 or 44.1? I'll be transfering the recording through my Harman Kardon CDR-20 stereo component.

Hope somebody can give me some advice, I am somewhat new at this. Thanks!

for ways to setup your mics, check the link here http://www.taperssection.com/yabbse/index.php?board=14;action=display;threadid=6160

look into nos, din, and ortf if you can get yer mics postitioned like that.

if you can move your stand anywhere, try to be dead center, like 20-30 yards from the sound source, somewhere between the stage and the board.

Since it looks like you will be transferring straight to a CD-R standalone, I'd say record in 44.1 to save you some potential problems.

Good luck and happy tapiring, and +T for not being a total n00b

Thanks for the advice Schwilly. I got a pretty good recording. THe cardioids were about ten inches apart at about a 45 degree angle to the stage. I was about twenty yards from the stage dead center and about 7 feet high. Los Lobos's head of security saw my set up and plugged in his D8 also. All around good day, a bit windy though. Even with Sound Professionals heavy duty windshields I got a little rumble.

Thanks again. I'll be reading posts here to further my education on recording!
