Title: SLA Battery Question.. How Much Is Too Much..??
Post by: Cactus on July 12, 2004, 11:20:31 AM
hey now quick question.. saw a great portable rig this weekend involving a power converter and sla battery to power a ua5 and jb3.. im starting to research and found a 12 volt 14amp battery .. my question is how much is too much .. is this way to much amperage for a jb 3 or..?? he was running a 7mah and is lasted him all day ,, so i figure 14 should do twice that .. but would it smoke these toys or..??

any info greatly appreciated

a 12V / 1,000,000 Ah wouldn't fry your JB3 or UA5 (unless you didn't bring those 12V's down to 5V -for the JB3 and 9V -for the UA5). I think Amps are like gallons. Amp Hours are like Miles Per Gallon.

So if your JB3 draws 500 mAh then a 14 Ah battery would last around 28 hours (excpet you'll never get 100% more like 80%) so really about 22.4 hours.

I'm expecting my 7 Ah battery to get me through the entire 2 days of Coventry (although I'm bringing extra power + chargers just in case).

The amperage is fine.  You need to make sure the voltage is correct.  As you probably know you need to get the voltage down to 4.5-5 volts for the JB3 and whatever is appropriate for the UA5.  FWIW you might consider several smaller batteries instead 1 big (heavy) battery.

ummm, alex herd got a 12v 7 amp battery to power JUST his jb3 for a ridiculous amount of hrs, something like 46 hrs :)

and that was WHILE sending a digital signal :)

I think he meant sending a digital signal TO the JB3.  +T, smartass.  :P
