New Zoom H1n
« on: January 02, 2018, 05:55:30 PM »

So, it seems like the Zoom H1 is being revamped - with the proverbial "n" added to the model name.

A friend shared this video teaser from Zoom's FB account:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/zoomf8/permalink/1879523799026110/

Everything else I have been able to glean is from Japanese sites. Some pictures (that look like wireframes), but absolutely no info on specs/improvements/etc.

Never been much of a fan of Zoom's "handy" recorders, although I do have a soft spot for the H2n's weirdness (if not.for its noise floor).

From what I've seen:

- Mainly visual improvements (looks slightly flatter, and with a prettier protective cage, for what it's worth).

- I like the H5 and H6 rotary dials, but the one on the H1n is not located in a good position on the unit IMO.

Here's another video on YouTube:

http://learnaboutfilm.com/zoom-h1n-review/ has some short samples of ambient sound and speech, and it sounds quite respectable at the price.  I doubt whether this would be a "go to" recorder for anyone here, but for a car glovebox recorder for grabbing some unexpected FX or whatever, you could probably do a lot worse.  The direct access to main functions is valuable when making such a "sudden" recording - you don't have too fiddle with this and that first.  A point and shoot recorder if you like.

I don't do any recording these days but I'm tempted to get one of these just in case I have a sudden inclination to grab some sound.  And I might put up some comparative recordings vs say the Sony M10 or the H2N for the amusement of you good people.

So did you end up picking one up ? A potentially very useful feature for taping is the limiter that was absent on the H1.

Yup - and in a few weeks it might see some action at a jazz gig.  Why I keep buying recording equipment when I almost never have a chance to actually use it is beyond me... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hi5x5Go4eIY is a very well-produced review for anyone interested in the little thing.

90 second sample of Roland in-ear binaural mics (Roland CS-10EM) direct into Zoom H1N mic input.  No eq etc.  Venue was a jazz club, band was unusual being unamplified trumpet, trombone and drums, with amplified string bass.  Sounds ok to me but I'm old and have a heavy cold!  A very pocketable rig - the slim form of the Zoom coupled with the right angle connectors of the Roland mic works very well.
