hi I was wondering if anyone could recomend me some self contained, portable recording equipment. I'm new to taping and don't know which end is up...

We need specific information in order to help you, vague generalities likely will continue the sluggish response activity.
- Did you read the Newbie Central (http://www.taperssection.com/yabbse/index.php?board=14;action=display;threadid=4237) post in the Archival Info forum as posted previously?
- Do you have any questions about the information contained there?
- Do you understand the basics of mics, mic power, preamps, ADCs, and recorders, so that when we present options you'll understand our suggestions?
- In what kind of venues do you expect to record? Small bars? The local high school gym? Massive arenas? Medium sized clubs?
- What kind of music do you expect to record? Electric amplified performances? Acoustic amplified performances? Unamplified acoustic performances?
- Define "not much" with respect to stealth gear. Does that mean you want to be able to stealth with this gear? Or is it okay if the gear is not at all stealthable?
- Define "inexpensive". Inexpensive means different things to different people. Are we talking $300? $600? $1800?
- Define "small". Must the gear fit in your pocket? Or a fanny pack? Or a backpack? Or a suitcase?
I'm not trying to be a useless prick by asking these questions. Without more information, we can certainly propose anything under the sun that comes to mind, but it won't be very useful nor will it be a very effective or efficient means of providing feedback. Help us help you by addressing the above questions and I bet you'll get some prompt, informative responses.

yes I read it and understand the basics. I would be recording in small bars and it would be electric amplified.
as far as stealthing goes, I wouldn't need to because the artist I would be taping has cleared taping.
and I would be spending about $300 for something that is pretty much pocket size...

is 300 for recorder or what, pleasespecify, youre almost there ;)
youre gonna need mics/power/cables/maybe an analog to digital converter/and last but not least, recorder!!!
so speak up man, cant help what we dont know
if 300 is for everything, others may help you better than i prolly can!!!put the money into mics/recorder

I know you didn't ask for stealth but this would be the simplest for $300

schwill, i still say dump 180 on a jb3 tho!!!you can ALWAYS upgrade the steup w/ out upgrading the recorder
go buy some rat shack mics and run a y cable so that both mics run into ONE line in!!

MT180 is the model number, bean. You can get them for under $100. Just trying to stay in his price range

I think more likely he just doesn't live on this board like some of the rest of us losers. :P
FWIW, xxdukexx, I think Schwill offers a goods setup within your price range. Not a lot of options for $300, but I bet you'll be happy with the setup Schwill mentions.

also, if you can swing a little more money to get an MD recorder with USB2.0, the you wouldn't need to worry about a sound card

Why would it matter if his MD recorder has USB 2.0 compliance? He wouldn't be able to upload digitally through the USB unless he is using one of the new (and very expensive) Hi-MD formats. And even then, it would work up until he decided to get an external A/D (if that ever happens). Then the upload will not work; it is SCMS prohibited.
Better off just dumping the MD all together and going with a JB3 instead. And this is coming from the guy that still runs his original MD recorder next to his new(er) DAT, just for old times sake!
