highest JB3 sample/bit rate?
« on: May 08, 2004, 01:41:07 PM »
I sent mine 24/96 last night and had major issues. Is 16/48 ok or must it be 16/44?

16/48 is what I send to mine and it seems to work fine.

yep, 16/48 has been GOLDEN out of my jb3;-)

but i am heavily thinking of switching from 48k to 44.1k for the resample shortcut;-)

no worries, ive even sent mine a 96k recording from the v3 and it didnt sound like samples were dropped, but i didnt look at waveforms, so i really dont know, even tho there were no audible glitches that i heard

i'd rather have the ua-5 decide what should be in the 44.1 stream than resampling software so i continue to use 44.1 directly

well, wavelab and other 'top quality' software programs should be efficient enuf to do just a phine job on resampling, but i feel greg on this one, its not a quality issue really, its just a PITA!!

I'm 99.9% sure you can't actually record 24/96 to the JB3 - you can send it the signal but it'll just truncate to 16 bits. There's a post way back when these first came out about someone's experiences with 24/96...

Yea my JB3 could read the signal but when I played it back it was extremely slow.

what about 16/96?

when i first got my jb3, i had a ua5, and the ua5 was accidently set to 96k when i fired the jb3 up and connected it

i didnt know that i couldnt just turn the knob on the ua5 to change the sample rate the jb3 was getting(the jb3 sticks with whatever sample rate it first gets) untill you restart it

it played back really slow on the jb3, but once i transferred it and changed the sample rate in SF, all was good, no noticeable dropouts

There was some discussion and testing a year or so ago.
  • The JB3 truncates 24 bits to 16
  • it is bit accurate at 44.1 or 48
  • it records at 96 but many samples are dropped - you can make the playback sound right by changing the sampling rate manually (don't convert the sampling rate).  If you save it that way it will re-write the header properly.

while we're on the subject, let me just clarify something. When you select WAV as the recording format, it will lock into whatever the signal is, right? You don't have to actually set the sampling rate is anywhere, right?

Has anyone ever had trouble getting the JB3 to lock onto a signal? If so, what did you do (in what order)?

Thanks,
UJ

When you select WAV as the recording format, it will lock into whatever the signal is, right?

As long as its 16-bit and 44.1/48kHz. Other bit-depths and sample rates may lock on but the NJB3 will truncate > 16-bit bit-depths and will likely drop/misplace samples with > 48kHz sample rates.

You don't have to actually set the sampling rate is anywhere, right?

Assuming you're talking about feeding the NJB3 a digital signal: simply select WAV and you're done - it'll pick up the sample rate from the incoming signal.  (Obviously, you have to set the sample rate on your external ADC.)

Has anyone ever had trouble getting the JB3 to lock onto a signal? If so, what did you do (in what order)?

Haven't had trouble, so no real world experience.  First I'd first check all mechanical connections and power-cycle the ADC and NJB3.

only small problem ive had is that it doesnt like to start right up sometimes

and in that case, i keep a couple paper clips in my bag anyway, just pop a paperclip in the reset on the bottom, and BOOM, reboots right up

a recording studio engineer buddy of mine told me there is a general school of thought that says 'you should record/master in the same sample rate as your final product'.  if you are only going to make cd's from your recordings there is no reason to record in 48k other than having an afinity to dropping samples when you resample :P    this is very evident when trying to do a matrix with a source recorded at 44.1 and another resampled from 48 to 44.1.  for example doing a mix with the livephish sbds. they sync perfect to sources recorded at 44.1, but with a source resampled from 48 to 44.1..  forget-about-it!

oh btw.. i just bought a new 40gig JB3 on ebay for $289.. is that a good deal?
