D8 question
« on: May 25, 2004, 04:56:38 PM »
So I just talked to Paul- my beloved D8 needs a new head.  Estimated cost is right around 300 bucks.  I can come up with the cash if I decide to repair it, but my budget will definately take a hit this month.  That said, I've got several options:

1) fix the head and have a working deck for a good long while
2) fuck it and go with the JB3 as my only device
3) buy a new M1 from Paul for $550 that is still under warranty
4) roll the dice on another used sony portable in the yard sale

What should I do?  What would you do?

have paul fix the D8 and it will be like new. no use buying an m1 for more money.

i have never owned a jb3, but the creative stuff i have used didnt impress me, and i would be afraid after a while of heavy use it would be rendered useless. hard drives go bad no matter how much you care for them. can you fix a hd in a jb3? probably not, but then again you can probably buy a new or refurb for less than getting the D8 heads replaced.

i'm not flip-flopping, i would get the d8 fixed....

good luck with your decision

If you have an outboard ADC, I don't see any reason to fix or buy a new D8.

If you use the D8's ADC while stealthing, well...I doubt the NJB3 ADC is any worse - most people couldn't tell the difference between the NJB3 and D100 line-in/ADC, and the D100 is well renowned as a significant cut above the D8 line-in/ADC.

If you're worried about reliability issues with the NJB3, either [1] don't, or [2] just buy another NJB3 as backup - 1/2 the cost of the D8 repair and your mind is at ease.

Educate us, then - what experiences have you had with your NJB3 that you feel are [1] typical, and [2] problematic enough to require a permanent backup?

I'll consolidate my thoughts in a separate thread once I get around to it.  I'm at work now so I won't be able to come up with a good list of grievances.

Here's another option:
What would yall think about taking up a collection and using some of the gear purchasing dollars to get this deck repaired?  I'd be more than willing to turn it over to the loaner program and I'd throw in a couple of 7pins as well.  Thoughts?

a D8 with a brand new head is barely worth $300

buy another, or ditch DAT altogether.  do you have a home deck, or is this your only playback deck as well?

Fuck it Lee...scratch the d8, sell it on ebay as needing a head replacement, I'll bet you get 100 for it. Then use the xtra funds to buy a back-up jb3.

if you can get a repairmaster warranty on the m1, do it. I bought a new one in 5/03, and it just needed a transport gear replaced. woulda been at least 250 without the repairmaster, but it was free. 550 is a great price for a great deck. as long as it has all the new paperwork with it, you should be able to buy the warranty from amdig, or another vendor. So far, I've gotten about 600 in work done, for 200 bucks laid out for extended warranties on two decks.
