Looking for a HD Video Camera - Step inside for suggestions
« on: February 18, 2012, 03:02:44 PM »
Hey folks,

I have been taking HD Video clips of the past three shows I recorded I have considered sinking loot into a good HD video camera.  Anyone have tips?

I am looking for something that is HD, internal storage + SD Card expansion + Timecode.  $$ is not too much of a factor but maybe a suggestion or two in different price ranges?

Sub-$1500 (does timecode drop this low?):
$1500-$2000:
$2000-$3000:
$4000-$5000:

Also, just because timecode is needed for some of the production I am under the impression that I might be able to get away with getting a lower prosumer model and a timecode generator?

Your opinions are valued.

Keith

Here is a good forum that will help. I personally run a HV-30 and love it but my next one will be a sd card based camera. Different codec but no tapes. Smaller size for  >:D

Small is good for  >:D and it happens to be what the company uses already for their webcasting and canned seminars.  (three Vixias for multi-cam)

I do not mind a larger unit and was told last night that tape and a unit without timecode are both unacceptable.  When I informed that it will likely double the price of the unit I was looked in the eye and was told "I made $980,000 webcasting last year, I have the money."

With that said, I am not looking for a $30,000 camera.  I would like to keep it to $5,000 or below so it is something that I could lug into shows as well.

For what purpose are you planning to use timecode?

Ironic, I was literally just looking at the Sony HXR-NX5U.  B&H has is for $3895.  I dont give a shit about timecode but the person that does post for the webcasts does.  I would use it for freelance video shoots mostly in live music settings.  I wonder how the Sony HXR-NX5U does in low light?

It is very good in low light but i dont why someone is asking for timecode for a single camera i think that is only a benefit for synching multiple camerar while shooting.i cant think of any reason to need it if your only using 1 camera. The nx5u is quite a deal though you get 3cmos,xlr,hd sdi, timecode. If you want to spend more the Canon xf305 would be next in line. But you can 2 of the sonys at that price.

They already use multiple HD cameras this is just one that I will have in my possession so that if I film one of their speakers here then they can sync it to one of theirs there.  Pretty simple but I try not to think about it too much.  I'll look at the Canon xf305 too.

Gracias

I asked and they use timecode to sync the video to the scripts which also contain timecode.
