Chopping the legs on a FOB stand!!! DynaLite 0470 CHOPPED!
« on: August 16, 2008, 08:57:50 PM »
hey
so I have a dyna-Lite # 0470 (2M) stand
I got from B&H about 3 years ago

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/16614-REG/Dyna_Lite_0470_Black_Compact_Light_6_5_.html

I use
it onstage
and for some
"friendly" FOB shows

I understand It is the same as a Bogen stand (dyna-lite is also Bogen)

I know some folks chop the legs
for FOB use

but
where?

how much to chop off?

it looks like if I cut off about 6"
the legs would be equal to the top of the tripod collar (for lack of a better term) when the legs are folded up

is this what others do?

any suggestions
before I hack mine?

any advice
is always
appreciated

thanx
tons!

peace

I am fairly sure that dyna lite is a sub division of bogen... any how its the same as a bogen  stand
I'm pretty sure it came in a bogen /dynalite box  but this could be a pure mind blank to me

doen't really matter.. its the same as a bogen

this stand is light weight and folds down  to ~18"
tallest for smallest

any how I am glad you use something else
but
that was not my question...
I have seen the same stand used by FOB folks for years and  it's chopped

again
Q: how much to chop off on the legs
that are super long?

thanx

 for any future input

BTW I have many other stands a larger and slightly taller Bogen stand , a Bogen Superclamp , A Photoflex stand that is ~11'  plenty of other assorted stands regular mic stands, a mini  round base and tiny Dewey etc...

this dyna light is my go to stand
due to its compact size and amount it can be adjusted to may heights and its light wweight

No problem home slice!  I enjoy a good pissing match with vain internet strangers who take things to personally.  Frankly I was hoping you would pull some vague excerpt from an internet post showing evidence of a relationship between Manfrotto/Bogen and DynaLite.  Then I would be able to pull my doctoral thesis out, "Photographer lighting and accessories, an in-depth look."

No really, I wasn't trying to hijack your thread or piss you off.  I did have some input and wanted some clarification on your dyna-lite remarks.  If you want my real opinion, just use some logic and thought to determine where you could chop the stand legs and still have good stability.

hey no worries
I am not pissed

except for bashin my  comment about bogen and dyna lite
you have offered no helpful suggestions for my question

but
have helped to keep the post alive

:) that's helpful!

ahhh yes logic...
I can use that, but wondered abouyt folks that had actuall experience  chopping the stands
rather then just my educated (logical) guess...
say what you will

at the Pickathon
I did compare my stand to a bogen that had been chopped
they looked the same except for the chopped legs
of course
I did not
make any kind of notations on the length

peace out

:)

My legs are cut down to 12" (or when measuring it folded up, the legs extend up to where the sections connect).  The rubber boots come off quite easily and will stay reattached to your hacked down legs if you put them back on.

hey
kgreener
thanx for those links...
:) !!!!!
and
bhadella

 your chopped to 12"
makes sense

I measured mine they are about 18.5 "
I figured about 6" off
would place them about the collar of the leg mount
which would equal about 12 "

thanx to both of you for very useful  (actual) information

+t for both of you

I'll consider where I should cut them off
should the ends be round cornered for the rubber feet to fit best?

thanx

My 3373 is cut back 6 or 8" like you're saying. Perfect for seated shows when the legs are flat against the ground, but I miss the height outdoors. I need to buy another I guess

so
johnw

are you saying that
you legs are hacked short enough...
that you can't (safely) make the tripod point upwards?
or that your legs have to be horizontal to the ground at all times?

currently
if I need the extra height
I pull the legs in tighter and can get about an extra 6 - 8" of height from the stand
which can be helpful

thanx

I'm saying I cut the legs off like you suggested. It still makes a tripod fine but takes a few inches off the height

note that when you cut the legs off, you will lose a bit of stability.

for fob i generally run with the bottom of the pole just off the ground, like 1". Then the legs ar essentially flat and you can throw a backpack or jacket over top of them to prevent people from triping over the stand
