Title: Anyone use Sonos systems? (plus bitching about Squeezebox)
Post by: acidjack on May 11, 2010, 11:28:16 AM
I have found the Squeezebox to be a ridiculously infuriating piece of gear, starting with the requirement of only having one "drive" and the fact that it has now lost the ability to find the designated drive.  I didn't think my file system was that complicated, but it has really driven me nuts.

I'm set up as follows:

Macbook Pro
- iTunes folder (contains all of my MP3/AAC files)

external Iomega 1.5TB drive
- folders entitled "Masters" etc.  Each folder contains subfolders containing WAVs, then within those, FLACs

I can't get the aliasing of the iTunes folder to work, either.  In general, I find the thing to be a very limiting solution with pretty weak software, at least on the mac.  It's also pretty expensive.

So anyway, when I next set up an audio system, I think I will go a different route.  I've got friends who use this:

http://www.sonos.com/Default.aspx?rdr=true&LangType=1033

But again, these people have pretty simple music setups.  Can this thing play FLACs and actually draw files from multiple drives?

You can use multiple drives with a squeezebox.    http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=126287.0

^^ yes, I attempted that on my Mac. It did not seem to work.   It also doesn't even recognize sub-folders within the drive I give it, e.g.

/Iomega HDD/***Masters/band name blah blah/band name blah blah (FLAC16) - it won't find the last folder.

Been working *great* for me... for ten years... about 12 drives and many terabytes.

You're on a mac, so the symbolic links should be simple.

So far I love the new Touch I picked up.  A few bugs in the LMA app that I'm hoping I can work out in the settings, but hooking up wireless to my laptop has been a breeze.

I have yet however to take the time to link up my externals.  I am going to try and set that up this weekend, so I will second that any help would be appreciated from Mac users who have done this.

It was working fine until my first router died.  Now it just refuses flat out to find my music library.  I even tried changing the library folder to a different folder to see if that would help.  Think maybe a factory reset is what I need to do to get it back on track.
