Title: Oade V3 Comp
Post by: jerryfreak on November 30, 2007, 07:31:35 PM
I dont have a ton of bandwidth to uplaod this, but i have 3 dvdrs ready to go to the first three people who can:
a. promise to upload or burn at least one copy for someone else
b. pm me your mailing address.

from the text file that accompanies the files:

V3 Shootout
The following sources are compared in this test:

Schoeps MK4>CMC6>stock V3
Schoeps MK4>CMC6>Oade ACM-mod V3
Schoeps MK4>CMC6>V3>AD2K
Schoeps MK4>CMBI>Oade ACM-mod V3
Schoeps MK4V>CMC6>Oade ACM-mod V3
Schoeps MK4V>CMC6>V3>AD2K

These tests were done with the original source files played back through a Mytek stereo96 DAC> Dynaudio BM6A active monitors at their maximum level before clipping. The monitors were placed about 1.5M apart and the mics were arranged at about 90deg w/ 17 cm spacing about 1M in front of the monitors (basically pointing right at the monitors).

I tried to select some varied source material, both live SBD material representative of what comes over PA at a concert, and also studio tracks with varying sounds and levels of compression

Gain on the V3 was about 42 dB for the CMC6 sources and 46 dB for the CMBI bodies.
I tried to achieve concert volume levels (I usually run the V3 at 35-40 dB of gain with the CMC6's, so its not too far off.)

I'd be very interested in hearing the 4v>v3>Ad2k vs the ACM.  I'm thinking about ditching the 2k (and the lead!) and going this route.

What were your initial impressions?  I've been dying for a comp!  Thanks

I want to reserve my impressions till other peple get a chance to listen.

BTW, you dont need lead to power your ad2k, I've been running mine off homemade Li-ions for years

I'm not super-clever when it comes to homemade batteries. Plus I already had the lead when I got the 2k.

The battery geeks 10-14-88 I was looking was over $180 a few months back.  Do you know of any cheaper 12-18v li-ions?

yeah, you need to have some know-how to build it:

Alright.  I have these files.  I wanted to ask the group how I should post these though.  File size for each sample is about 760 MB.  I had planned on using MediaFire or a similar file hosting program, but didn't realize these files were so large.  I also was curious how I should rename them.  Right now they have the source info in the file name.  I've never participated in a comparison recording, but I've seen enough to know if I don't do this perfectly I'm gonna catch some major shit.  Probably will anyhow...;)

Thanks for any tips

Jesse

can the files be cut down to a more reasonable size with cdwave or some other utility?

Yeah, that's a good idea, but I'd want Jamie to decide.  He choose a range of different source material intentionally.

You could post them as a "full size" FLAC torrent if some of the folks here at TS that run a server would let you do this.  That way you wouldn't lose any of the quality of the original audio...  Just a suggestion.

Also, I have a copy of these now too and I would be willing to burn a copy for someone that would be willing to do likewise for someone else.

 ;)

Oh by all means.  If anyone wants a copy of this just ask.

Thanks again for a great comparison, Jamie!

Topic seems rather quiet.

Anyone ever find a place to host this?  Impressions?

I typically just use the analog stage of my V3 into an R-09 currently, but I'm considering picking up the R44 for some 4track work which would give me the opportunity to use the ADC in the V3 vs the new Edirol.  If there is a significant difference between the stock V3, Oade mod and R44 ADC (currently unknown) I may well be game for the mod.
