strange BT problem (firewall related)
« on: October 03, 2005, 01:43:17 PM »
so I know how to open my ports in my router settings and to open the same ones in my client.  I use both bit tornando and bit comet and everything is fine.  every now and again I have to go back into my router settings and resave the settings.  so last night while using tornado I noticed I was firewalled.  checked the port in it.  closed it, went to my router settings and checked them,  resaved them etc.  still firewalled!  opened the same torrent with comet and I wasn't firewalled!  I have 6000-10,000 (randomize) open in tornado and a random one between the same numbers in comet.  I have 6000-10,000 open in my router.  when I am firewalled using tornado it is a number that should be open ie 9000 something....  I have tried this over and over again and the samething happens.  comet is fine but I am firewalled in tornando.  and no I don't want to just use comet.  I like seeding with tornado much better.  any thoughts as to what is going on?  obviously it is something within tornado and not my router settings b/c  comet works just fine.

Dont randomize. I think it picks a random port, ignoring your port range you specify. No reason to randomize. Pick a good port range that is small like 35225-35235. No need to forward that many ports. Each torrent uses its own port, unless you are using Azereus. So unless you are running 4000 torrents there is no benefit.

I'd also check and make sure that uPnP is disabled in your router and the client. I'd also only use one client or the other. Maybe the Windows Firewall is choking since it is randomizing?

I have my xp firewall turned off.  I turned uPnP off in tornado but it still didn't work.   everything worked fine yesterday and then......
I thought the randomize would pick a port between the given numbers  ???  ie it does pick a number that should be open but it shows as firewalled.  the main reason I don't want to only use comet is b/c

1  there is no superseed option and there for I have to upload much more to get the first leechers done and
2  if you have say three torrents running/seeding I can't tell each one how much to upload.  the priority option really doesn't help.  one will pump out my max upload (only 30kbs) while the others won't give shit.  I like in tornado that I can set each one to 10 or 15.

I am not sure if you are big on ABC, but it does everything you mentioned both clients you are using now do...and it is all in one window!

I've used every client and never fail to fall back to ABC. Very customizable as well.

That is strange. Have you run a virus check and spyware check? I am sure you have, but sounds almost like something is hijacking your settings.

I'd try a new router and see if that helps...you can always return it if not and eliminate that as your problem.

I've done a virus (avg) and spy sweeper, spybot and adaware .  nothing found.  I'm finding that lots of other things are going on strange with my pc.  I did a disc clean up the other day and think I accidentally got rid of IE and a few other things.  I never use IE but have been told not to get rid of it all together.  my wordpad is gone umong other things.  did a system restore but couldn't go back far enough it seems.  tried to d/l IE and can't get it to install.  thinking of just reformating again but really don't want to unless I really have to.

edit:  as for ABC I'll check it out again.  I checked it out when I changed a few months ago but for whatever reason kept comet instead.

got IE back not that I ever sue it.  still no wordpad.  I installed word perfect from my install disc and from what I can tell it's not part of it  ???

now I'm firewalled with comet  >:(    damnit!  my settings are right......

fixed it.  still fucked up with tornado.  so strange.  I;ve used it for a year with the router and no problems.  time to try abc again.

I remember why I didn't like abc.  I was always firewalled.

AH HA!!!

Ditch AVG. I bet that is where the root of your problem lies.

I used AVG for a few weeks and it consistently fucked with my internet connection, causing nasty drop-outs and all sorts of things. I bet you a dollar that is the problem.

I had the same problem, thought it was my modem, had Comcast give me a new one, still didn't fix it, bought a new router, no go. Removed AVG and VOILA! no problems since the day I removed it.

I'd remove it for a few days and see if the problem persists.

I moved over to Norton Enterprise Edition. Less cumbersome than the standard Norton 2005, which I updated one day and it was deactivated via their Live Update since it was a borrowed copy. It is focused towards Corporate machines, but will work just fine on a home computer. Updates are alot more frequent too since it is geared towards big companies that MUST be protected from everything.

I can send you my evaluation version if you like. ;)

I can also send you McAfee. Comcast supplies that for free to its users. Lemme know.

Did you check to make sure your PC has the same IP addy you originally set? Your router may have reassigned the IP.

I think that may be it.  they added a 00 to the end of it.  it was .1  now it's .100

Check your router to see if there's an option to reserve an IP for a given MAC. I know NetGear routers allow it. not sure about others. This will allow your BT machine to always get the same IP. If not then you just have to check it occasionally or never turn your machine off.
