Title: man, my tapes sound so much better ...
Post by: zhianosatch on October 01, 2004, 12:17:16 AM
... now that i own this modsbm-1! wow, what a difference! my previous rigs don't hold a candle to my current dpa 4061s > modmps-6010 > oade modsbm-1 > d8. fuller, rounded, more musical sound. solid, full low end, enhanced but not over-exaggerated. the high end could use some de-crisping and smoothin' out but the BALLS factor in my tapes is up at least three notches! this combo is what i've been yearning for, in my cursed poverty, since i started listening to recordings critically and researching gear. i have climbed the mountain and it is good.
special thanks to:

1) st_l-taper for the hookup
2) this engineering company for employing me
3) some of my favorite bands for putting on EXCELLENT shows recently, including, but not limited to:
-ministry, which is by far the best band in the world
-ras michael and the sons of negus (along with the whole monterey bay reggaefest)
   -in flames
4) my d8 for hangin' in there like a CHAMP
5) myself for being responsible for new "at-the show" techniques (and the constant pursuit of perfection)
6) taperssection for enhancing my musical and taping life!

word to all of your mothers!
armen

p.s. -T to my IBM HD that just took a dive, but +T to a new maxtor 120 gigger and windows 2000! i mention this because i have to retransfer and re-track all my recent tapes... d'oh!

i just bought the micros and i was all excited to get home and listen to my recording to hear the improvements...only i was a little disappointed.  i haven't did real comparisons yet, which i should probably do - that'd probably make me happier.

on a side note, its made me want to buy a new preamp and get rid of the ua-5

yeah, i think a v3 is definitely in the works...at least thats what i'd buy at this moment in time.  however, when i fianlly save up enuf money, something else might be out thats better...we'll have to see.

well i just did an a/b comparison of the micros and my old luxes from shows by the same band in the same venue that i had taped....the micros put the luxes to shame.  so i'm happy now.  money well spent!

bean, the new king of the v3 fluffers. dood, I'm sorry you suffered hearing damage as a child, but do we have to get fluffage EVERY day? ;)

haha, well put it this way...i'm in debt about $25k right now because of school loans and junk.  i'm definitely on a budget and trying to save where i can,  i think if i lay off the endo smoke a bit and try to save more, i might be able to get it one day...but seriously, it might not be until next year at this time.  and who knows what will be available then...but one day hopefully i'll have a nice preamp.  (not saying the ua-5 isn't nice, but seriously, who doesn't want a v3) ;D

Not that they are at all common, but about how much is a used V3?

yeah, i don't see them dropping in value too much soon, unlike the V2, which dropped like a stone

well, its understandable that the V2 dropped like a stone since the V3 came out, and if Grace releases a V4, the V3 will dive

congrats armen!  i'm fucking psyched about my new rig too!

mbho 603a/ka200n (active setup) > eaa psp2 > todd-mod sbm-1 > 7pin optical > jb3

smaller rig than ever, awesome clarity from the new mics compared to the oktavas, ability to run low-profile and possibly stealth if i need to, and did i mention how much the sound smokes my last rig?!?!

well the v3 may be closer than i had planned.  I have a bunch of home stereo stuff that a friend gave me, and i figured out yesterday that its probably all worth around $1000.  so i'm going to try to sell that on ebay and then if i sell my ua-5 i should have enuf money for a v3.

i was going to put it up on audiogon, but audiogon also has links to ebay if people are looking for stuff, however, ebay, doesn't have links to audiogon.  so i figured i'd sell the stuff on ebay.  the biggest pain is going to be shipping, but the buyer pays it, so its not that bad i guess.

What mod was done for the SBM?  Are you using the mic or line for your input?

Thanks - I'm looking to increase the Balls Factor on my d8, too!

it was an original line stage modsbm1 done by the oade bros.  i'm pretty sure it's the same as  the "warm mod" he does for it now, though don't quote me.  i'm pretty sure Armen runs his DPA 406x's>batt box>modsbm1>d8
Title: Re: man, my tapes sound so much better ...

doug also does a p-mod and a t-mod in addition to the w-mod he did on most of the sbm1s out there right now

So if I want to get more level via the line in with my current set of core-sound cardioids a warm modded sbm would get me that 6 db of extra gain and the noticeable increase of Balls Factor?   I'm still feeling out my new rig {core-sound cards + batt box > d8} but it seems like the line in is almost too clean although I never have to worry about levels and the mic/Lo has more beef but can get too hot and I get paranoid if I can't watch the meters all the time.
