Heatshrinking Schoeps Active Cables
« on: July 25, 2006, 02:52:03 PM »
Has anyone out there tried to do this?   If so, what did you use and how did you like the results?

If not, does anyone out there have any recommendations on a product to use for doing this?   I have a pair of KC5s and would love to do this from a management standpoint.    Would prefer something that is NONpermanent (in case of sale, etc.).

Thanks!

Are you doing it for protection or to keep them together and tidy?  If it is the latter then just take 1/4" strips of gaffers tape and tape them together every 12"-16" that is what I did with my LC3KA's.

Now what I really want to do it put thin, clear shrink tubing over my km100's for protection.  Like a mic body condom.

I used gaffers on my 4022s and after a year of taping in the heat, they began to peel and when I took them off left residue on the cables...wont be doing that again...

Doesn't goo-gone or some other solvent take care of that w/o damaging the outer layer of the cable?
Out of the game … for now?

that is what I used, and it worked fine, I just didnt want folks to think that gaffers doesnt leave a residue...

Exactly!!   The gaffers I put on the KC5 started peeling/breaking and has left a bunch of gunk on the cables.   Great idea on Goo Gone.

Hell, these probably aren't going anywhere, so does anyone have any suggestions on a more permanent method of putting the cables together?   Techflex or something like that?

It's not the least expensive solution, but I'm really happy with my connectorized KC5s.  With the capsule half measuring about 7 feet, it's just the right amount of cable to stealth or run a short stand, and I can easily add the other 8 feet when needed.  The side benefit is much easier cable management.  Those Schoeps cables aren't nearly so difficult to handle with only half the length.  Not pictured are my body connectors with about 3" of cable and the matching connector.

heatshrink would be fine, imo.
if you really want it gone, you can remove it with an exacto knife and peeling it off.

I've been contemplating the same thing lately for my km140s.  I put some heatshrink on the mic bodies to start, and they came out nice.  But the mics got HOT when I was heating the tubing to shrink it.  I couldn't even hold it with my bare hand for very long.  Of course, the bodies are metal, but I'm a bit concerned about trying to heat active cables this way with tubing on them.  I found some heathsrink tape on-line that I was going to try, but now I don't know.  Maybe I'll just use electrical tape like I do on all my other cables.

Of course, the big problem here is finding something that is large enough to get over the end of the cable, but will shrink small enough to be snug.  That's why the heatshrink tape caught my eye.  Any other thoughts?

Eric

Heatshrink should be fine on the cables.  The bodies get hot simply because they're metal.  The cables will get pretty warm, but nothing like you experienced when wrapping the bodies.

On my XLR's I used a low-profile tie wrap like this: http://www.devicetec.com/DTIProducts/CableTies/Default.asp that I found @ Home Depot in the electrical dept.  I think it'd probably work on the Schoeps actives.
