Title: Broken 7xx battery?
Post by: johnw on March 10, 2008, 01:53:32 PM
One of my batteries appears to have completely died at Langerado. I think that it may have fallen off the car armrest onto the floor, but no abuse and no obvious physical damage. It hangs between 50-75% charged on my Impact charger and the 702 just keeps blinking orange, but when I have it connected to the 702 and try to power on, nothing happens. I'm going to try and send it back, but is there something else I should try?

do you have a voltmeter?
i would check the voltage.
the lead from the battery to the terminal probally broke.
its fixable, but kind of a pain.

Voltmeter reports 8.18. Still not working on the 702, think I'm gonna try and send it back.

Stop playing around with it and recycle it!  In the meantime store it in a fire safe location.

Lithium batteries are dangerous if the case is compromised. That most often occurs due to physical impact. It can cause an internal short.

So....  Don't drop your lithium batteries.

I do not believe the fire problem is as big of a problem w/ li-ion cylindrical cells as the Li-Poly gel packs.  Although a short in the PCB or wires could cause a major problem.

Thanks for the advice. There isn't any evidence of injury to the battery at all. The fall was maybe 12" onto a carpeted mat. If these batteries are that fragile, that is pretty sad. I would imagine it survived much worse during the shipping process as it arrived inside only a bubble envelope. Going to set it down on the concrete basement floor now.

If you are getting 8+ volts that is what you can expect as best possible.  If that is the voltage across the female pins in the battery the 7xx should also be seeing that voltage.  I am puzzled.

If it is B&H they have a no BS return policy if it is within the year period of warranty.  Call them.

Cheers

That's what is weird about it. My other thought was that one of the sleeves came out, but they are both still there. I got it off amazon for $25 and have a number to call for replacement, but haven't called yet. It apparently has a 1 yr warranty...

I bought a 9700mAh batt of Amazon and the guy was righteous about replacing it.  It only takes an e-mail to find out.  I cannot understand why it does not work.

Do you have a link to the 9700 mah battery on amazon?

There is no such capacity. The biggest available here is 7600mah (Impact NP-F975 from B&H). There is an 8400mah made is Isreal, but you will have to deal with Oleg. Good luck with that.

I think it was a typo and they meant 6900.
