New Custom Mic Mount - Need Stand Advice For Stand
« on: April 17, 2022, 09:00:12 PM »
Hey all,

I just got a 3D printed mount for my MK4s and AT853s and I have some questions about connecting to my mic stand. I've got an Avenger a625b, small and portable. For the longest time, I've had Mr. Potato Head on the head of the stand. But now I want to be able to mount this. What sort of head adapter do you all recommend for it in order to connect to a 3/8-16 to 5/8-27 thread adapter? Also, any sort of adapters that should be essential for my gear bag?

Pic attached of the setup (which I'm super stoked about) and the equipment. Thanks for your help!

I think you should have one of these in your bag

Perfect! Grabbed a few! Kinda hard to know what connectors to use sometimes. No issues with adding vibrations with this? Sounds stupid. But again, I’ve never used mounts before. I’d clip everything to potato head.

The Rycote shock mount will deal with any vibrations, if you secure your mic cables in several places below the shock mount using Velcro wraps!  Vibrations can and will travel on the mic cables if they're not firmly secured on your stand.

+1 to this, and I use those same velcro wraps for all of my cable management.

I want to emphasize one thing dactylus said, which is to secure your mic cables below the shock mount. That means the first bit of cable coming off the mic (in a gentle loop so vibrations are insulated from traveling through the cable) should be tied off a few inches below where your shock mount attaches to the stand. Your SRS base doesn't have this, but the "official" Rycote bases have a cable clip built in, and I would still not use it and tie off below it.

This.  The microphone cable represents a potential direct line of transmission for structure-born-handling-noise to the microphone, and needs a loop or loose length above its securing point.

A bit belt and suspenders, but I've seen a few folks use both the built-in cable clip and a loose-ish cable tie at the top of the stand, with a loose loop of cable between the two, as additional insurance against an inadvertent "cable tug" from something like a passerby reaching out and grabbing the stand to stabilize themselves and accidentally snagging the cable - the thinking being that any tug on the cable will first pull out the loop before the cable goes fully taught.  But, this is probably in the category of more-or-less unnecessary things people do once they've experienced a problem and want to do whatever they can to avoid it happening again!

Wow, here I thought I was anal about cable management!

I think it’s a valid issue. We all want to make sure accidents like that don’t happen and we prepare for the random acts that may happen to our stands.

What sort of clips do you recommend?

Believe me, it was not a criticism.

Clips? Are you talking about mic mounts / shocks? Rycote blows away everything else I have tried. No type of donut or elastic mount comes close. The price is well worth it for top performance.

You do need to be careful to buy the model with the right kind of compliance for your mic system so it isolates properly for the mass it is suspending. Here is some info on that.

An alternative to Velcro straps are these cable wraps. I really like them. I always carry a few Velcros, though, as the wraps don’t work great when the diameter is very small.

Clipping the mics to keep some slack at the top with the mounts. Just curious how people arrange that.

Thanks for that extra info.

Oh, I don't know of any "clips" that work well for that - use velcro wraps like have been discussed already, or the elastic wraps like aaronj recommends because you can make them tight enough so the strain-relief loop doesn't slip.

Here are some pictures of my setups showing how I tie my cables off.
