Oktava MC012 Windscreens
« on: October 09, 2003, 03:35:54 AM »
I seem to remember reading about this topic, but I can't find it via a search.

So anyway... I've taped a couple of shows at the Bluebird in Denver this week. For both shows I set up behind the soundboard (1st time on the ground floor, 2nd mics clipped to balcony). Well, apparently they run the A/C (kinda unusual for a musical venue). During the quite parts I can hear what appears to be wind (from the vent over the soundboard I imagine).

So, what do I need to do to correct this. I know I should use some windscreens but what kind will do. I've seen the indoor and outdoor variety. Also do some windscreens cut down on the audio quality? ANything else I should know / consider?

Thanks,
MIKE B

Ahem.   :P  Check the archives:

FWIW, windscreens won't get rid of the noise of the ventilation system itself (humming, hissing, etc.), but will remove/reduce rumbling noise generated by the ventilation system's breeze blowing over your mics.

I use DPA wind screens with the MK012's.  They are smaller than the above listed Shures.  A bass roll off filter at about 80khz works wonders too.  The filter on the Sound Devices MP-2 along with the screens does the trick in most situatons

Thanks Brian. Exactly what I was looking for. I guess I better work on my searching techniques.

mike i recommend the dpa's also, i use them outdoors and have been pretty happy, much better than the crap dust covers they came with from the sound room.  sonic sense carries those dpa's and they're reasonably priced.

and if you like those and need more, try cutting  two 2" squares of rat shack speaker fabric and place it over the caps inside the screens.  works wonders on wind and doesn't affest the lows too much.
