H4 frequency response
« on: October 28, 2011, 11:42:52 AM »
Hello everyone,

I've just spent a fair bit of time comparing various recorders and am just curious if anyone knows how the H4 (not H4n) achieves the frequency response it does. Specifically in the low end. Any 10mm or smaller electret mic capsule I can find has a huge rolloff starting around 500Hz and down 10 db by 80Hz. Yet the H4 seems to not sound like it does. Is there some DSP or other equalization going on there that anyone knows of?

Whatever is happening it seems that this contributes greatly to the impression of the noise floor. Especially for those using it for ambient environment recordings where the focus is lower frequency content. Just for giggles: I applied some post equalization to other recorders to "compensate" for the capsules response and oddly enough got close to the way the H4 behaves.

Any thoughts are appreciated.
Thanks all.
