Title: Yard sale score! (bose content )
Post by: Tye on May 27, 2007, 12:02:37 AM
I hit a couple yard sales on the way to a lake south of Tahoe , walked up and first thing I  noticed was an old pair of Bose 901's , the lady said $40 but I have to take the cabinet also.  :o  All I could think was $40 for a paif of 901's! Great shape and these things sound incredible !!

So I crammed everything into the back of our Jeep along with 3 people and a dog, tight fit but well worth it

Anybody know anything about this setup? The cabinet looks  custom. They said it was their uncle's when he was a DJ
Turns out the guy I bought it from toured with Leftover Salmon as a stage hand.

Hmm... looks like a Marantz 16 amp and a 7T preamp in the cabinet.  Those alone should fetch you 400+ on ebay... or put them to good use, I believe the older Marantz SS gear is pretyt highly regarded.

Yep I just looked in the back of the cabinet and it is a 7t preamp and a model 16 amp

I think I will be putting these to good use the sound is just phenomenal ! Pink Floyd is sounding real nice right now ;)

Awesome, very nice find.  What is the piece of gear in the top of the cab?

It is a Heath Kit AR-29 receiver (never heard of the company before)

I've been listening to all sorts of cds tonight it is amazing I've heard things on some of my favorite cds I've never heard before.

Does anyone know what the "One"  & "Two" mean on the bottom of the speakers ??? left and right ???

Nice find on the Bose/Marantz gear!

Heathkit was an electronics kit manufacturer from Benton Harbor, Michigan
Known for "good value" gear that was easily modded, .... the AR-29 can be easily moddified into a boat anchor     ;D      or a maybe an amp to use in the garage

My first Heathkit:

Very nice! +T

My buddy just dropped off a "pair of old speakers that had been sitting in his basement for years".  They turned out to be a pair of Bose 601 Series II's.  These are f'in massive sounding speakers (28-20,000Hz) with some serious clarity, even with the little bit of foam rot that's going on.  Otherwise, they're flawless.  I hate to say it, but my VR1's have remained unplugged since these arrived  :scared:

And I'm not a big Bose fan...

Mine may have to be a boat anchor it turns on and lights up but there is a nasty hum from it.

That is a sweet find....and to think I drive by every yard sale and think "what junk."

Ever yard sale has some old excercise equipment....I did find a triple beam at a sale back in the 80's for $10.

Probably not for a while I have always wanted a reel>reel . My old boss at work has some old GD reels he recorded from way back I want to try to convert.
It came with a Louis Armstong live show on it !

There is an article out there on the internet somewhere about the process for transferring old R2R tapes that have been dorment for years... apparently the tape becomes brittle and is sussceptable (sp?) to breaking.  The process involves baking the tapes for x number of minutes and then running them through for conversion.... not sure how long they're good for after that, but FYI.

cool - thanks for the response Tye.  best of luck on the conversions - most certainly look into baking them - hopefully the reels are not in too bad of shape.

peace,
ts

Anybody want an Ampex 440C cheap? Only one channel is recording right now, and I haven't tried it for playback.

Mine is a 4 track with a 2 track headstack. I don't know when that happened, but it was going to be a restoration project of mine, then I kind of gave up the electronics bug.

Edit to add... I just found this pic and couldn't resist! Avitar ready!

edit again to add: damnit! it's not moving... much cooler in motion http://www.dailyfeed.com/Ampex440.gif
