« on: December 06, 2005, 10:01:08 PM »
all i can seem to get is static with this combo.  is there some incompatibility i don't know about?

the impedence of the speakers is 4 ohms.  not sure how to tell what the sony is?  too much info in the manual...

trey what gear are you using exactly?

are you saying the sony should know not to pass a signal to the speakers?

OK, I'm no expert on these kinds of things, but I don't think doing this can damage the speakers - the damage could occur to the amp.  However, there was a thread a while back where people were saying that it was OK to plug speakers that were rated at 8 ohms into the 4ohm terminals... not sure if that means that the flip of that is true...

sorry bout your luck guys - I please let us know how it is resolved... :(

mine keeps saying code 11 protection.

A while back I read a thread on audioasylum (I think) about the 3000es - the early models did not have the plastic 'seal' on the back and many people had their unit lock up because a stray strand of speaker wire touched the unit and it shorted. Apparantly when this happened the unit locked up and said "code 11 protection" and had to be sent to Sony to be fixed.

Maybe the 4ohm speakers caused a similar situation...

From what I read it had to go to Sony to be fixed, but don't quote me on it.
Mine has to go to Sony to repair the hiss issue....

I dont think there will be any damage to the speakers.  they are not getting the 'umph" they need...so they are essentialy not getting enough juice.

as for the sony though...
I dont know about that either.

tiny bit of music and mostly static in the left channel only.  didn't get anything out of the right.  i'm gonna get back into it tonight and see what i can figure out.  i had a problem with a blown fuse on the amp recently but got that fixed.

so the sony unit needs 8 ohm rated speakers?  what are some options?

Did the speakers work before you hooked them up to the Sony?

As far as 8ohm speakers go, I think the vast majority of speakers are 8ohms, and 4ohm'rs are more rare...

I can ditto that, my friend is a Sony dealer, they had to send a few of the first units they recieved back for that isolation problem, same exact thing.  He said they got them back with a fix that looked like Sony just put some silicone behind them to resolve the problem.  They stopped carrying the Sony ES in stock and push the Denon units more simply because they were tired of the return hassles.
Maybe a couple of small scratches, but thats because these mics are chick magnets.

didn't have much time to play with it last night...but i turned it on and just get nothing out of the speakers.  i'm gonna open the adcom back up and look at the fuses again.  i have a feeling that's where the problem is but it just seems odd it would coincidentally go down at precisely the same time i decide to switch things around.  i'm fairly positive i didn't do anything that would cause problems...

ok...update.

it's the adcom that keeps blowing fuses, speakers are fine.  but, the sony still doesn't like the 4 ohm b&w's, but works fine with some 8 ohm shitboxes.  i can't figure out how to set the sony to go 4 ohm although it says it is rated for it on the back.

it is rated for 4 ohm?

looking at the unit indicates impedance of 4-16 ohm

on the back bottom right it says that the back surrounds 4 ohm or higher, front A+B is 8 ohm or higher

apparently not, but it will take a 6ohm load. your DCM's are 6 ohm rated.

Infinity (I know, bad perception b/c they are so "mass-market" but I think there is some really solid speaker engineering going into the infinity speaker line, great performance for the cost.

Also, Triangles and silverlines are supposed to be very easy to drive.

Well if you love your speakers, and are willing to spend $450 (or find someone with the know how to make something similar), you can make your amp think its driving an 8 ohm load:
