Title: Apogee Mini-MP XLR Analog Out
Post by: chinariderstl on November 28, 2015, 08:01:53 PM
Question for the board, being the whore that I am, I saw a taper tape with an Apogee Mini-MP at the Dead & Co. show last week and became immediately green with envy.  Since then, I've been perusing eBay and found a couple units refurbed by Apogee.

This one looks particularly nice.

I am, however, concerned about the "hot" XLR output coming from the Apogee.  I was looking to stand this up in front of my Sony PCM-M10, but the M10 has only a single, stereo-mini input.  Is it safe to run XLR outs into a M10 in this fashion?  I did a quick check and see several single (mono) XLR-F cables that terminate to a mini-jack, but see few dual XLR-F cables that terminate to a single, stereo-mini cable.  I suppose Ted or Robb could make one??? I'm not sure ...

Does anyone have any experience running one of these things and/or outputting from XLR to stereo-mini?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Chris.

This preamp has been on my lust list for a long time but I've never actually had one in hand. I think it would be magic with the ADK TLs.

One of the features is an output control. You can run the preamp stage hot but dial it back at the output to avoid overload.

Between that feature and the fact that when you unbalance a signal in the cable you lose 6dB you should be able to run it with a recorder like the M10 that can take a fairly hot input signal to the line in.

Sweet, thanks Roger!  That's all the assurance I need. ;)

Best, Chris.

You won't be sorry!
This is, hands down, my favorite piece of gear.

I haven't yet found the bag I like for it, but there is a thread on here with a lot of suggestions, all of which I've tried and I'm still looking.

Set the output knob to zero and the M10 input to 6 on your first test drive, then adjust the knobs every 15 mins or so until you have the Sony at 4.
Take notes and listen back and you will find a wealth of depth at the various settings. One of them will be how you want all your tapes to sound!

Hi, guys, another question; will a 9V RB-270 DVD battery power the Mini-MP?

Craig T. made a bunch of recordings using Schoeps>Mini-MP>M-10 that sound amazing. One of the most versatile preamps out there, IMHO. Sounds great with virtually every mic pairing I've ever heard.

Wish these would pop up more often in the Yardsale. I'd love to add one to my gear locker...

On my third full rig and this is by far my favorite pre. Very open and golden on the ears. I bought mine from a guy that ran the xlrs to a mini stereo into m10 and he loved it. I may have the custom xlrs to mini cable some where in my storage closet that he gave me.

I ran an MMP>M10 from 2009 to 2012 and just picked up another one.  There's a photo of the custom cable rig I used in the post linked above.  I think I ran the gain at +20 for must shows.  No issues with the output levels.
