JB3 transfer to laptop
« on: January 24, 2004, 10:41:42 AM »
I've read that you need the Soundblaster soundcard to do audio transfers from the JB3. I have a Dell Inspiron 2650 laptop. Last night a friend told me that I probably couldn't change the soundcard on my computer ... meaning I can't use it to transfer audio. OH NO! He said he wasn't sure about it but ...

Is this true? This there some other way to load audio (perhaps in real time>audacity?) onto the laptop?

not at all.  if you have a jb3 and a firewire or usb input on your laptop it requires no soundcard.

hmm ... that's good news. I wonder why I can't get my JB3 to connect then. I'll try another reinstall I guess. It keeps saying the unit is busy and then flashes a message saying the Soundblaster card was needed.

I've been trying to use the USB, and have installed everything on the Creative JB3 disc that came with it.

thanks for the good news.

Maybe the software on the disc is for Creative soundcards specifically?  I had to email Creative and they gave me some specific info regarding what files to download to get the nomad to work with my pc, here's a copy and paste (maybe this will help?):

You can download the Playcenter software on our website by going to
http://us.creative.com/support/downloads/.  Scroll down to "Search by
Filename."  Put in a search for PlayCenter3_02_52.exe.  We also have a
newer, sleeker media software application that takes the place of
Playcenter you might be interested in called Media Source.  To get this,
put in a search for CMS_WEB_1_01_85.exe.  Download that as well as
CMS_JBT2Plugins_1_01_07.exe for extended support with your Jukebox 3.
For more downloads pertaining to your Jukebox 3, just go the main
download section and select your product from the three-pane window,
select your operating system, and hit "Go."

damn, I still can't get it to work. I downloaded the stuff for Windows XP and it still won't connect ... says "Player is either not connected or busy, please try again later".

ARGH! I have a feeling there's something simple I'm not doing ... because surely it's not meant to be this difficult.

hey,

i just taped my first show this weekend (came out shitty, levels way too low) and i used a JB3.  i had bought the red-hat Notmad software but couldn't get it activated over the weekend because they didn't send me an activation code.  so, i spent 3 hours downloading various creative software applications...i could install most but none of them would connect to the player.  then i finally got the red-hat installed and it now works fine...not sure if this helps, but i like the notmad program.
on the jb3, do you have the jb3->PC picture icon?  have you tried 'adding hardware' via the control panel on the PC?

Did you install drivers?

Does the JB3 show up in your device manager and is it listed as working properly?  I don't have XP but hit up the help file if you don't know where the device manager is.

Power it up, connect it and then check:

For Firewire, look under IEEE 1394 Bus Host Controllers - expand it and look for the JB3.
For USB look under Universal Serial Bus controllers.

halle-freakin-leuha .. or however you spell it. thanks for your help. Finding the device manager was the key. I thought I saw the driver installed, but apparently not. That only took a few days  :)

My next newbie question coming in 5 ... 4 ... 3 ...   :drummer:

i just taped my first show this weekend (came out shitty, levels way too low) and i used a JB3.

try normalizing the .wav file in soundforge or one of those programs, it'll boost the levels.  it might still not sound great, but it might help a little.

thinking back, I thought the drivers would initialize themselves after being installed but it took me actually going into the device manager and turning them on for it to work. I run Windows XP btw ...

Just in case some other new JB3 owner is having the same problem.

I'm almost ready to try and start taping. I'm very psyched. Got some great local bands coming up as well as North Mississippi All Stars on 2/6.

also ... I just got a response from Creative's help dept (submitted question late yesterday afternoon, not bad) on how to fix problems. I accomplished that last night thanks to advice on this fine fine discussion board. I fixed my problem by ...
-turning off all other programs and closing all windows
-go to HELP on computer
-search for device manager
-click on the USB icon w. the JB3 and a yellow exclamation mark
-that prompts an automatic installation of needed drivers for XP (which I think I had already done using a link on this thread
-ignore a warning about incompatible drivers???

For the record, here's the official instructions from Creative that I got today ...
...............
Thank you for contacting Creative Tech Support

With regards to the problem mentioned below, can you please try the
procedure below to rectify the problem.

1.  Remove all USB devices.

2.  Disable all background applications using MSCONFIG:
   a.  Click START -> RUN -> type MSCONFIG and click OK
   b.  Select SELECTIVE STARTUP and uncheck STARTUP GROUP
   c.  Apply the changes and reboot the computer when prompted

3.  Activate the WINDOWS STARTUP MENU by rebooting the computer and
tapping F8 once a second.  Select 3. SAFE MODE and press ENTER.

4.  Open the DEVICE MANAGER. Do this by right clicking on the My
Computer icon, then click on Properties. Click DEVICE MANAGER.

5.  Remove 'ALL' CREATIVE NOMAD and UNKNOWN DEVICE listings from the
UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS CONTROLLERS category

NOTE:  For every two USB ports on the computer, there should be one USB
HOST CONTROLLER and one USB ROOT HUB listed.

6.  Reboot into NORMAL MODE.

7.  If the player is connected and powered on, open the PlayCenter
software.

Please feel free to contact me again if your having any more enquiry.
Thank You I apologise for any inconveniences caused to you.
