cd tracking program for MAC
« on: May 30, 2004, 11:38:02 PM »
Trying to help out a MAC users friend of mine.  What is a good (preferably freeware) program to use for tracking cds?  I use cdwav on my pc but it doesn't run on MAC.

Thanks,
Joe

SoundStudio ( http://www.felttipsoftware.com )
Audacity ( http://audacity.sourceforge.net )

I'm sure there are others, but those are the cheapest ($50 and free, respectively)

I'm playing around with the PC version of Audacity.  From what I can tell you can't create cue sheets with this program.  Idealy I would like to be able to use cue sheets rather than splitting the wav file.

John, Can you recommend a windows emulation program for Mac?  I can create cue sheets with Cd Wave if I can get it to run on a Mac.

Acording to the Cdwave website it will run on a program called virtual Pc aparently this is now a MS product which costs $130.
http://www.homepages.hetnet.nl/~mjmlooijmans/cdwave/faq.html#Mac

Is there a cheaper alternative?

Slight thread hijack but with an eye towards helping ya out, Joe...

Are there any Mac burning programs that use cue sheets? I wonder if shntool can somehow output cue sheets that are usable...or if xACT could have a feature added that makes them. If there are Mac programs that do, it might be possible to convince Scott to build that feature into xACT...

Hey the more the merrier.  I'm not familier with xACT but it seems like cue sheets would be a good feature.

I must be missing something how exactly would you create tracks in Audacity?

I thought Mac was suposed to be easier to use but so far I keep hitting roadblocks.  I'm trying to relearn everything I know how to do in windows >:(

Ok I figured out how to create tracks.  Its amazing what reading the directions will do.

However I haven't figured out if you can resample from 48 to 44.1.
I'm guessing that for a free product its not an option.

Is there anything I should look at other than SoundStudio for resampling?

Edit: I found some information in other posts and online about using Itunes to resample mp3 and aiff and Ogg.  I cant find any information about resampling wav files with Itunes.  Is this possible? Recommended?

Unfortunatly I don't have easy access to my friends computer so I can't test this myself.

Why are you so opposed to actually splitting the wav file?  It's what I've done since I started taping, never any problems.  And if you did happen to have a problem, shntool -join isn't that hard to learn (and xACT makes it even easier).  ;D

And no, iTunes is not a program to use for resampling.  You probably want to jump to either Sound Studio (didn't it come with your mac???) or Spark LE/XL.

I've never used it, but Audacity MUST have resampling available in it. The online documentation says that before version 1.1 it couldn't, but says it's available in 1.1 and later...

shntool v2.0 will do simple cue sheets.  it's not finished yet though.

(and yes, i built it into xACT for when the next shntool is done.  i've been testing a dev version)

Having to split the wav file isn't a deal breaker for me and you're right the files could be joined but I do have my reasons.

1) I like to create 1 cue sheet for the 48 file and then use that same sheet for the 44.1 after I resample.  That way when I start creatinfg DVD-A discs hopefully I wont have to retrack everything.

2)The reason I'm trying to figure out how to do this with a mac is to get my friend who  is going to help me with tracking set up.  We are each going to do half of the tracking of the  Bonnaroo shows. I want to be able to transfer his half of the shows from the NJB3 to his laptop, and keep a copy for myself.  Ideally after he tracks the show he could simply send me the cue sheet by email rather than mailing me the entire FLAC file of the show. I would then match this to my copy of the show and burn cds.

3) Old Habbit, this is the way I'm used to doing it

Should Sound Studio have come with the Mac?  Again its not my Mac so I wouldn't know if it had.  I'm going to check on that and purchase it if he doesn't have it already.

Scott, great work!

Thanks again everyone,

I missed that in the documentation.  Searching for resample in the built in help file didn't turn up any thing usefull.  I'll look at the online information again.

Edit: This is all I have found so far

"A resampling feature is planned, so sounds of different sample rates can be combined in to one project."

I track 24/96 files in spark once.  then I use the batch converter to resample and dither.  result: 2 sets of files the exact same length (one 24/96, one 16/44.1) and i only split tracks once

you can probabaly do the same in plenty of other apps...

Audacity can do the downsample.

There is a samll drop-down with the sample rate in the corner of the project window. Change to what you want, and it will perform any necessary conversion upon export to WAV or whatever else.

Good catch Cooker +T

I could have sworn the JB3 was Mac compatable.  I just checked the system requirements. You are correct Windows 98/2000/Me/XP only.

John Kelly,

Didn't you used to run one of these?  I guess you used something other than your mac for transferes?

It still might work. I have a dvd writer thatisnt supported by apple but it still works. It might just see it as a regular fat32 hard drive. Its worth a shot.

They aren't Mac compatible.  There is a beta driver out there, but it only works over USB and I've never had it transfer a full show (it would always get an error and start over).

And yeah, I have a PC just for transfers.

No it's not, and it does not show up on a Mac as a volume.  It appears in the System Profile, but that's it...

if it was a fat 32 or ntfs drive or any "normal" format, the mac would have no problem.  but they made it a format that nothing can read without their special software

creative labs? proprietary? color me surprised.

my dad was in town this weekend, and is a total techie, when i showed him my JB3 he was astonished... "you mean to tell me you're replacing your $700 DAT machine with something made by CREATIVE? I thought you said you'd never buy another Creative product again!"
