Title: Panasonic Capsule Omni
Post by: Chuck on August 07, 2003, 01:01:14 PM
I remember reading about a quick and cheap way to make a good omni using Panasonic capsules. Does anyone have a link or info on this? I'm wanting to make a measurement mic.

I've made the mic's using the Tidmarsh guide.. If you do a search on www.google.com you should come up with it.
They sound ok, but really bassy. I think this can be alleviated by using different caps in the battery box. Other than that, they sound like CSB's for the most part, but obviously A LOT cheaper.

How is the noise level on those?
Do they overload easily?

There's a Yahoo group that's dedicated to this stuff.  80% of the work that goes on is with Panasonic capsules.  As soon as you join it, check out the files section.  You're probably looking to do the 'Linkwitz mod' to the capsules.

Here's the 'homepage' for the group http://home.earthlink.net/~gottapes/micdiyers/main.htm

This stuff looks like fun - I'll get around to it one day!

The Noise isn't much of a concern with these that I've ever found.. there is some there, but once the music is going , BFD.
I've never overloaded them myself.. and I've taped quite a few LOUD shows with them.. (Melvins, MCD, etc).

Did you do the Linkwitz mod or the 2.2k resistor between the battery and + terminal on the mics?

Which is the linkwitz mod? Doesn't really ring a bell.

I run 10K resistors in the battery box. I didn't ever take the time to experiment with these mics.. altho I probably should just so I can stealth with em and not have to worrya bout the boomy low end.

The 10k resistors are the mod I spoke of. It is supposed to help with high sound pressure levels.

ahh I've always run 10K resistors, so I couldn't tell you if there is a difference.
