I've been doing a bit of DVD authoring with DVD Architect and have noticed that when I finally go to the "make DVD" option to prepare the files for burning, I always get a "audio track will be recompressed" message.
The video file has been prepared with Vegas and is a PAL-DVD compliant MPEG-2 with PCM audio. The audio I've been using is 48k/16bit and I've selected PCM as the audio output format so I don't really understand what recompression will be going on.
Has anyone any ideas?
FWIW, the audio on the finished DVDs always sounds fine (through my TV's speakers) but I'm curious as to what's going on all the same.

get a program like gspot that will tell you the info on the disc
see if its really pcm audio after you burn it or if it actually do compress it to ac3
not that i can help but running gspot will at least tell you if you have a issue to figure out or if its a "default" pop up

Normal workflow is to render video and audio in Vegas and then author in DVDA. In vegas you choose what audio you want or you can choose to use AC3 in DVDA
in any case I dont think you can have 48K, only 44.1K PCM

The standard bitrate for Video is 48K. I always use 48K when possible in Vegas. I have gotten that warning of recompressing in the "make DVD" process. I have not figured out why it says that sometimes. I have checked the DVD with gspot and it always says the correct format. I know Vegas almost always compresses the music on menu pages.

Thanks for all the replies...

Good to know I'm not the only one that this is happening to. btw I've had silent menus on the discs I've done so far so I don't think it'll be that causing the message to come up.
As a related aside, over the last month, I've twice tried to sign up to the forums at www.dvinfo.net but I never get the final moderator's approval. I even tried email direct to no avail. Is it a closed shop over there or am I just being impatient?

I haven't heard of that site. I get a ton of info from dvxuser.com, though.

Both DVInfo and DVXUser are great sources of information.
As for your issue with audio recompression, I think it is likely that your 16/48 audio is being compressed to AC3. Double-check the settings in Architecht by hitting ALT + ENTER and see what it says next to Audio Format. The default is AC3, probably so joe-consumer can fit more video onto the disc. Set it to PCM Stereo and it will accept your WAV file.

It does this occasionally for me, when set to PCM. It still comes out as PCM.
