Retractractable cables any good?
« on: October 31, 2005, 09:51:38 AM »
Hello All,

Went wandering at the Fry's over the weekend and happened upon some retractable cables (USB, Firewire, Cat 5 & phone cord).   They look very attractive to reduce the volume of field kit cables down to ~ 1/4th of the space I'm packing around these days.  They're sort of like this:

[connector end] -----  [spring wound spool] ---- [connector end]

The wire gauge appears much thinner and there's obviously less shielding so I'm curious if they'll carry enough amps to run bus powered external drives & converters off the lappie,  if they're prone to rfi glitching, and if they hold up well in battle...   :-)

Anybody have any feedback on these?

Much obliged    :guitarist:
