Sensitivity of low-sens-modded SP-CMC-8 compared to DPA 4061
« on: March 31, 2008, 09:32:38 AM »
I ran a short test and it showed the 4.7k-low-sens-modded SP-CMC-8(AT943´s) cardioids are about 3-4db LESS sensitive than the DPA 4061 omnidirectionals.

I recorded the same song at the same volume and the same gain on my HI-MD recorder with each of the mics.
The recorded volume of the 4061`s was 3,7db louder than the AT943´s.
In Audacity I chose "amplify" up to 0db(no clipping allowed) and +3.7db was the result of max. amplification for the AT943-wav-file.
Maybe useful information for some of you.

You wouldn't hazard a guess as to how the unmodded SP-CMC-8(AT943´s) cardioids would compare to the dpa 4061's "dB-wise" would you?

I GUESS unmodded AT943s should bring +10 db to +12db compared to the modded ones.
=> unmodded AT943s should be somewhere between dpa4060´s and DPA4061´s regarding sensitivity.
=>unmodded AT943´s / DPA 4061´s: +6db to +8db/DPA 4061 at 0dB

Remember that an omni mic will always be louder or at least appear to be louder because its omni directional.. And a cardioid will always appear to be lower in volume. The only true way to test sensitivity is not with a music source but a steady 1k you can also use 250hz and 10khz and average them out The test tone source should be no further then 6" from the microphones this eliminates the directionality factor of the microphones. This test is not exactly how I do it but its close enough that you will get an idea.  I hope this helps.

Both microphones should be on the same axis when doing this test btw.

Of course I can´t measure my mics professionally.
I just wanted to know which of my 2 mics is less sensitive for setting levels correctly at the show tonight in order to avoid a clipped recording at the beginning ;).
Now I know I can start using my "DPA-gain-levels" with my cards and the MZ-RH1 as the cards seem to be 3-4dB less sensitive.

expected levels for this show at this venue: (been there many times and recorded many shows yet.)
25 of 30 gain on the MZ-RH1 using line in and a bbox with the low-sens-modded AT943s.
+10 to +15 gain on the dpa4061/bbox/iriver using "safety-clip" for LOWERING levels automatically.

My mics are mounted, I´m ready to record HAHA.
Still 3 1/2 hours until the show begins.....;)

@Chris: thx for your help+info.  ;)

All is cool ;), will upload one or both(DPA4061/low-sens SP-CMC-8) versions on dime during the next days.
As predicted, MZ-RH1 gain 26 of 30 on line-in with the low-sens-modded cards+bbox was perfect for this loud rock-show in a 300 people club.
Almost forgot to change HI-MDs before the 2nd set started.... ;D

By the way:
Jean Paul Bourelly(guitar+vocals)+Calvin Weston(drums+background vocals)+Melvin Gibbs(bass) rocked the house.
Need some sleep now :P

Thanks for the DPA samples.

I actually prefer the CMC-8 sound for some reason (Listening on speaker btw). Sounds clearer and more upfront to me but the DPA sounds great too, they are quite close sound-wise imo.

I boosted the cmc-8 bass at 100Hz by +8dB.
The dpa recording is amplified only...it needs some treble boost.
