Good deal?
« on: April 22, 2005, 06:00:28 PM »
I'm all set to jump on this but wanted to run by some folks here first. I have the opportunity buy a set of Neumann KM-140s w/150 caps for $2,050.
The seller tells me they're in very good condition. This is not an aution but a private owner. Good deal?

i'd say so.  a used skm 140 set runs about $1500-$1600, and it's hard to find a used set of the 50's, but they usually go for $1400 or so just themselves.

If it includes actives, that's a decent deal.  If not, it's not a good deal.

Yes and yes to the actives.

"Yes. They are in very good condition. I hv the
small wooden cases for the 50 caps, and the larger case for the 40s,
bodies, actives."

I have! I know this is a dumb question but I also know there are a lot of folks who run these mics so can you mount the body/caps or do you mount just the caps? I'm trying to decide if I need to buy the mounts for the active caps?

yes, get that neumann bar if he's including it... it will let you do x/y and ortf and a din-ish configuration.

if he's not then just order the Kwon bars from Frank....

You can mount the full mic but like tim said get the neumann bar or pick up some kwon bars for mounting just the caps. Its a great option to have IMHO.

I never used to run full bodies, the fewer times you screw and unscrew those cables the less chance that one of the threads gets messed up...

I run the actives all the time too.   Once you get used to running that way, you never go back.  It throws a small shadow, so you get away with fob.  You can clamp anywhere with ease.  Leaving the verticle bar and shock mounts at home is a liberating experience.

And get yourself a kwon bar for running DIN.   You can run the ORTF upfront but I never wanted to run XY after I tried ORTF.  NOS I love with the 43s.  I think the DIN will give a similar effect with the 40s and he has a bar for running the hypers DIN also.

Being that your limited to certain configs with the Neumann bars, there are times that I have run the full bodies instead because I have such a shitty position to tape from in the venue and I feel the need to modify the config to fit the room better.

Then there was the time I lost my neumann bars for over a year and was forced to always run the bodies because I didnt want to shell out the cash to neumann for new bars. Luckily I found them and its all good once again.

pretty much the same reason i won't mind running the bodies for my new schoeps.  being able to vary around the "standard" configs is kind of a necessity for the venues I tape in.  But it's just a personal preference.  the smallness of actives is the heat though.  if you got a stealthable pre/recorder it's a nice thing to have.

I ran x/y 100* with the ak50's and had a few decent tapes...

if I was you I would think about selling the ak50's and buying some ak43's.... but I'm a slut for subcards.

FWIW, A20S shockmount + Vark bar + SCG clips will give you good flexibility in horizontal spread and included angle - while still running actives.

vark bar is like $50, the sgc clips are $18 for the plastic... $62 for the metal :P

here's the link to the vark bar http://www.posthorn.com/Macvk_4.html
here's the link to the clips http://www.posthorn.com/Sbutton03.html#table5

I'm assuming you already have an a20s shockmount coming, if not they're available from posthorn as well....

cool. that's not bad at all.  I'll have to double check what i'm getting with the cmc64s.  I think an a20s and possibly an ortf bar but i'm not sure.  after seeing the price i didn't really bother with those details :P
