Topic: video camera model question

I was at a concert back in 2000 and saw a guy with a video camera where the lens/element section were separate from the recording section. He had the lens on what looked like part of a standard mic stand. The recorder section was like a half-sized laptop. He could position the camera in various ways at the end of the stand while viewing the screen on the recorder. Anybody have a clue what make and model that may have been?

I found out the recorder unit was a Sony Video Walkman. The camera was a "lipstick" or POV camera but I don't know what make & model.

B&H sells POV cameras, and low pro surveillance cameras like that. I saw a video a guy made years ago with a lipstick camera tucked between his mics like a 3rd mic, and it's a bit like being on a boat. Just this faint rocking back and forth that is enough to make you a little dizzy after a while. Neat idea, though...

I'm not in immediate need, I'm just curious and would like to learn a little more about this area. Its hard to shoot video in the club I go to most but if I could get the camera up I could shoot over the dancers. That's a bit tough with my old HandyCam so I'm just looking at options.

are you trying to do a pan & zoom shot or just a static shot?

I'm just dreaming at this point so I wouldn't mind looking into all options. I'm just looking at the options. It might be cool to have two cameras set up, one static and one that I can pan & zoom. That would give me more than one camera angle so that the end result video isn't so boring. But I have no budget for any of this at the moment and an R-44 is currently in my "buy next" slot.

It looks like the Sony Video Walkmans still go for a pretty penny used on eBay. There must be some other options, Archos maybe?

I shoot with a Panasonic GS320 and Sony PC 100. I use a heavy duty mike stand with a silk head and can shoot 8 ft or better to get over the crowd the only drawback is just a static shot. But is does very well.  Inexpensive rig to. Check out TTD for some vids shot with these setups.
