Title: best thin shielded cable for short runs of mono signals
Post by: udovdh on October 30, 2011, 09:01:02 AM
Hello,

What is the best branded cable for short runs of mono signals of mic to prosumer line level?
I am looking for 4.5 mm max total thickness, non-plus- ultra shielding to avoid GSM and other interference.
Online availability in short lengths is a plus.

Any recommendations?

Hi udovdh,

I would fight fire with fire and use double-shielded coax cable, especially this one:

http://www.kabel-kusch.de/Koaxkabel/PTFE-Koax/RG400/rg-400.htm

It is awfully expensive (€7,90 per meter), but the double shield should keep out much more RF noise than standard audio cable, and all copper wires are silver plated. Second advantage: soldering does not soften the insulation, since Teflon is so heat resistant. The capacitance of 95pF per meter should be no problem for short jumper wires.

Hope that helps!

Greetings,

Rainer

Thanks for the tip.
Interesting idea!
Any variations in this coax area w.r.t. suitability for audio?
Or thickness? (a tad thinner should be great)
Also I have to find a supplier in Europe or Netherlands...

Hi udovdh,

Kabel-Kusch is in Dortmund, Germany. Maybe they could give you another option with a smaller diameter, if you talk to them.

Today I checked the Thomann homepage for well-shielded cables and came across this one:

http://www.sommercable.com/1__produkte/1__030_meterware/1__200_0351.html

This cable has a braid shield combined with a second metallized tissue to get a shield coverage of 100%.

Maybe another option?

Greetings,

Rainer
