Title: basic questions about 5.1 receivers

I've toyed with the idea of picking up a used one on the cheap for years but one big issue has scared me away. Do most or all of them have some type of digital phase the signal runs into? My concern is that if I hook my phono pre to it, I don't want any digital in the chain. Finally is the option to kick them into "2.0" or "2.1" something all of them do?

wouldnt this be better in one of the audio sections?
