Vocals: What to Run with a Ribbon mic?
« on: March 01, 2009, 01:05:23 AM »
I have occasionally had to tape classical vocal recitals, and find that in the particular performance space my usual setups (AKG 426 in Blumlein configuration, or Josephson or other omnis on a Jecklin disk, or Schoeps MK4s in any of the canonical stereo setups like DIN, ORTF etc) don't seem to do justice, though they are fine for piano or instruments.  I am thinking of trying a ribbon mic (figure-8) to pick up the voice, what should I use to get my second channel for a decent stereo ambiance (voice and piano only, one mic stand and two channels of recorder).   Any suggestions on a second mic and how I should set up?

ribbons are figure 8
so
use 2 in Blumlein

it will sound natural - ambient and full
but it seems that you tried that...

I've done Blumlein, but not with ribbon mics.  I'd have to get a second matching ribbon mic, might be tough to get it and a good mount in time for Friday but I'll check tomorrow.  Thanks.
