DPA Fanboy tries the 4080s
« on: December 02, 2007, 04:07:08 AM »
Okay, I took the plunge and got a set of these.  I ran them today sitting back about seven rows from a repeat of something I taped last week from front row center with the 4060s (both >MMA6000>Sonosax MiniR82 (24/96).  I EQed the files with a bass boost trying to EQ out the mic's roll-off.  I generally prefer the omni sound of the 4060s, but at times location or hall acoustics make voices in particular too remote, or audience noise is too distracting for omnis to get a good tape.  I was hoping to get something towards what a Schoeps MK4 rig would get under similar circumstances, but with lower profile.

I think the voices did in fact come through better than what omnis from that location would have gotten, but the overall sound is not as good as the closer recording.  I do think it blows away all the mini cardioids I have tried (MM, ATs, you name it).  But it ain't Schoeps.

The mics are really great looking if you peel off the clips and wind screens.  They are cute wee things and it is amazing that they work at all, not to mention better than the ATs and MMs that are HUGE compared to these.

About a month or two ago, I had my 4022s into DPA for a check up, I spoke to the technician about the 4080s. He was told that next year they would be coming out with a similar mini cardioid mic that would be more suited to mic instruments and music. I'm pretty sure he said there was going to be several more mics in the 408x series, physically the same just different sonic qualities.
Mics: DPA 4022, 4060; Nevaton MC51, MCE400; Gefell sms2000, m20, m21, m27

Yeah, I was warned that better is coming, but I am too impatient.

I will try to find something to tape that shows them off in a useful way.  I should get a chance in a week or two, right now I am taping one or two things everyday (with DPA4060s or a full rig AKG C426B),  trying to avoid a CDing backlog (and also hold down a day job), and I need to sleep occassionally too.
