I'm very curious about this thing for field use, particularly the quartet. I know DF posted a comp more than 120 days ago but thought I'd try a new thread. Potentially either of these devices is a powerful solution given the Apogee preamps and ability to connect it to an iPhone or iPad, along with a laptop.
Also, am I correct that you could take an optical out of the new digital boards and grab all of their channels using one of these? Or at least, up to 12 of their channels?

Quartet pulls 30W (according to the silkscreen printing by the DC jack) - That is ALOT of power when you take into account additional power for your iPad or lappy

The Duet 2 I use has recently been modded by Black Lion and sounds as good or better than a V3 imo (they upgraded the analog signal path). I use a DVD battery and get good battery life, the iPad hardly uses any battery when recording. It is a little awkward in the field due to the breakout cable that gets tangled easily. But it is a very good rig. And post production is simplified. I use Auria audio software - you can record up to 32 tracks (maybe 64 but 32 is pushing an iPad anyway).

The Duet doesn't have a digital input, so it's 1 or 2 channels only. I'm not sure about the Quartet.

An ADAT Litepipe connection will give you 8 channels and SPDIF will give you two

A couple more questions not indicated on their website -- does the Duet allow you to "gang" channels so you can adjust levels simultaneously? Also, could you theoretically use a Duet without an iPhone/iPad/Mac? That is, could you just use it as a normal outboard pre, and connect the analog outs to a normal analog deck, adjusting levels on the Duet using the level knob?
I assume if an iPhone etc is plugged in, you can adjust the Duet's levels on that, also, right?

1) Yes. There is a button on the front of the Duet that links ch 1 and 2, you can also change these settings in Maestro (more on this in #2).
2) No. You install Maestro on your mac, iPhone, and or iPad which has settings for phantom power off/on, mute, output/headphones, link/unlink channels, etc. You need Maestro (the drivers) to run the Duet with all devices. So, it is only compatible with Apple products and will not work as a standalone pre/ad.
Also, since Auria is for iPad only I've installed Apogee's metarecorder app to record with iPhone (free if you have the one/duet/quartet. I have tested it and works fine for 1-2 channel recording (basic/no other major features) but I haven't used it in the field. Those are my two recommendations for software.
