i borrowed my friends D7 it powers up fine, but when i put a blank in it does noting.
if i try ot play or record it just says hold. i tried pressing record and pause together that didnt work either.
am i doing somethnig wrong?

you put it in, hit pause, then record, then pause again (while feeding it some form of signal) and it still does nothing?

you have to slide the hold button to the right. and to record you hit pause record pause.

Tommy E's on the right track, I think...sounds like you closed it and then put it in "HOLD" mode. The button you use to open it up should just sit in the middle of its track, not be all the way to the left.
