Software for PAL > NTSC conversion Help!
« on: May 04, 2005, 04:28:39 AM »
Can anyone suggest some good software for convertiong PAL to NTSC?  DVD Shrink and DVD Encryptor don't have the ability to do this for my DVD dubbing.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

it's actually not *that* difficult with the right software. i've used lots of different software for the job, and the best utility to do the job is Canopus ProCoder. it will retain excellent quality, and you don't have to re-encode the audio at all.  :D   the only downfall is it takes a good while to do... on my modestly fast editing machine (P4 2.8GHz with 2GB RAM), it takes about 2 hours to convert 30 minutes of footage. by that ratio, it would be about 8 hours to convert a 2-hour show... keep in mind, this isn't horrible or the end of the world. you can just set up the encoding to run overnight. when you wake up, it's done.

BigRay - i'd be VERY interested in that Nick Drake DVD you mentioned. any way i could get a B&P for it? (don't have any Nick Drake to trade, but would love to get a copy for a dear friend who would die for footage of Drake.) if we can sort out something, please PM me.

I've used the Canopus DV format converter for a project (Nirvana 10/25/90). The only thing that was a pain, was the files I had were DV type1, I had to get them in Canopus DV codec type2. After that, was cake..

There has to be an open source app for this?? Do any of the big DVD packages do this (i.e. Video Vegas or Adobe)? I've got 2 DVD's that I need to transfer as well... thoughts?

Check out www.videohelp.com

There are a few tutorials on that site which explain how to do the conversion and tell you what software to use. I had two PAL DVD's I needed to convert, but converting them via - software was a little too time consuming for my taste, so I just copied the disc via the outputs on my universal DVD player to my Panasonic DVR.

I second the paying 40 bucks for a cyberhome player that plays dvds....just changes the signal

or just buy it for the conversion....it changes the singnal to NTSC so you can just mini dv cap off there....

Just buy a DVD player that can play PAL discs. They're inexpensive and will ensure that you get the best quality playback. If you don't want to buy another DVD player you can "trick" your existing NTSC player to play PAL discs by re-authoring the PAL disc. You can read about it here: http://www.purelivegigs.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-760.html
The great thing about this way, is that you don't actually re-encode the video so there is NO quality loss.

But if you must re-encode the video, here's a cheap and nasty way to do it. DVDSanta (www.dvdsanta.com) is an all in one converter application. Very basic and straight forward. I've never actually used the PAL ---> NTSC function with DVDSanta so I can't comment on the quality of the conversion.

Doing a proper PAL ---> NTSC conversion is a multi-step process and should probably left to the professionals.

I know this is an old thread, but I thought I should share the little tidbit I found a little while ago when I downloaded a Zappa DVD that I found out was PAL.

http://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=221928

It is not a recode solution, but changes the IFO files to read NTSC, instead of PAL or the other way around.  It didn't work for me until I read through the whole thing & followed the instructions late in the thread. I believe it cuts off pixels on the top & bottom, but if I didn't know that, I would never know. Also, I have a Sony 5 disc DVD player and didn't experience any of the reported issues. I wish I knew about this patch before, as I've passed on several DVD downloads because they were PAL.
