i have this 300 gig maxtor shared storage hd a friend sold me. however i am not sure how to use it. do i need to connect it to a hub? can i plug it directly into my laptop? helpless

It's a network storage device from the sound of it...

You should be able to just plug it into your router and it will assign an IP to it. Other than that I have no idea as I haven't messed with one, but the owners manual on the manufacturers website will do wonders. You will have to setup your network to account for it, and it should be relatively straight forward. Its not a 'portable' device per say.
