Topic: New SATA drive

I finally ran out of room for files/projects so I just got a new 300Gig SATA drive
My current boot drive is an IDE.  On boot-up the system recognizes both drives no problem.
Windows, however, only sees the IDE drive. I have to go into Control Panel > Add new hardware > etc., and select the SATA drive from the list (it is there!?). I get a me4ssage saying device is working and the troubleshooter pops up.  The drive is now fully functional until I reboot, when I have to perform the process all over.
The SATA drive is on the SATA 3 plug (not sure why I did that ) Could that be the problem?

my work computer had problem when i was using SATA slot 2 w/o a drive on slot 1

The drive also may need to be formatted.

Right click My computer and select manage --> go to the Disk manager tab

Do you see your drive there?

does it show up in the bios?  you may need to go into the bios and change the sata setting to ide compatible (something like that).

there are also potential compatability issues between sata150 controllers and sata300 drives (which most new ones are).

how old is your mobo?

like the posters above suggested, first try to open disk manager, see if you see it, if its there it should prompt you to write s signature (I dont 'upgrade' the disks, btw, ymmv)

if its not in disk manager, go into bios and set that sata controller to 'legacy' or 'ide'
