Title: pre-amp options for marantz pmd660
Post by: cosmic charlie on October 28, 2005, 11:17:58 AM

One of my professors is an ethnomusicologist and does a lot of field recording.  He recently picked up a pmd 660, and like a lot of people I've talked to, is frustrated hissing he gets running mic in/line in.  What do you think the best option would be for him as far as a pre-amp goes? I let him borrow my ua-5 last weekend and even the extra mic level control on the ua-5 definitely helped with managing those levels.

What's the best way to make this thing managable? I've heard buzz about the oade Concert mod?  As far as the pre-amp options looking for a something small, managable and capable of external battery power.  Or should he just sell this beast and get a pmd 670?

-Thanks for your help,
Charlie

have him email Doug about his situation and I'm sure Doug will recommend the right mod for his type of work.  That way all he has to do is run (and power) one small box, instead of two.

Sounds like a plan.  Thanks for the recommendation.

He has to buy a NEW 660 from Doug with concert MOD. Doug does not work on items not purchased from him !!

that's right!  so he can ebay his 660 and get a mod'd unit from doug or just get an external preamp.  based on my experience with doug's mods, AND carrying around multiple units in the field, I'd go with a 660 from Doug.
