Title: Advice needed for DPA4061 > BB > M10
Post by: yates7592 on June 25, 2013, 09:35:06 AM
I've got a show coming up where I will be using my new M10 for the first time. I will be going:

DPA4061 > BB > LINE-IN > M10

Does any body have any experience with this set up? Probably at or close to the stacks and the show will be loud with plenty of bollock-rattling bass. In particular I'm wondering what rec level to use. Thinking of '3', but if some of you out there have direct experience of this set up that would be really helpful.

I've done it.  I usually had my M10 on 4 or 4.5 but depending on everything (and the size of the room, location of the stacks, etc.) you might have to go a little lower.

I know Unity was documented around 4-4.5 and I believe 3 was still safe but I've never gone that low.

I have used my m10 gain knob everywhere from 4-10 and never had a problem, just as long as you aren't overloading the battery box ;)

you'll get good levels with your DPA mics at gain 5-6 at the M10 when recording a very loud venue. I used to tape with the 9200 with +10dB gain at level 5 and never overloaded the recorder. So no worries with a simple battery box without extra gain...

Thanks for the info. How close were you to the stacks, and how were you running the DPA's - into XLR's or 1/8" miniplug or what?

Exactly. If it acoustic music or something that doesn't have high SPLs, you might have to go MIC IN on the m10. But if you're recording loud shows, you should ALWAYS go LINE IN ;)

if you're very close to the stacks 5 might be ok - line in of course - I terminated my DPA mics directly to a 1/8" miniplug...

You may want to start out even higher with the levels for the 4061 recording line-in. I record loud shows in clubs and I am usually sitting around 8 on my D50. The 4061s are a lot of things but "sensitive" is not among them.

I run my 4061's with my Tinybox @ +12dB (Mid Gain On My Unit), and 4 on the M10 recording dial at loud club shows.  This generally puts my usual peaks around -6 to -4dB.

Thanks for all the advice. Looks like 4 to 5 is the way to go for me to start off with.

I run my 4061's with my CA-9000 @ +10dB, line-in and 4.2 on the M10 recording dial at loud club shows.  This generally puts my usual peaks around -6 to -4dB.

4.2 on the M10 dial ??? How do you determine that the gain knob is exactly at 4.2 ??? 8)
